Summary
- The Switch 2 dock is not compatible with original Switch models.
- The new dock has technical similarities to the older one, but with some major differences.
Nintendo has made it clear that the dock for the new Nintendo Switch model (referred to as Switch 2) will not work with earlier versions of the Nintendo Switch. Although an in-depth discussion about the upcoming console was held on April 2, many details regarding its compatibility between the two generations have taken time to become clear. It turns out that the Joy-Cons for the new Nintendo Switch 2 are incompatible with the original model, but its cartridges can still be used. As for accessories, they have been hit or miss when it comes to compatibility between the systems, but now fans have more clarity on the issue.
At first glance, the new dock and the old one appear quite similar. Although the Switch 2 Dock is slightly bigger than its predecessor, it shares many technical features with the OLED Dock. However, a key difference lies in the inclusion of a cooling system, which was absent in previous models. Unfortunately, those who were hoping to utilize this improved cooling station for their old Nintendo Switches may find themselves disappointed, although this shouldn’t come as a complete shock.
According to Nintendo Everything, a listing on Nintendo’s Japanese website for the Switch 2 Dock Set indicates that it is exclusively designed for the Switch 2 console. On the other hand, a support page on the North American Nintendo site states that the Switch 2 is not compatible with the original dock. Given the differences in hardware specifications between the two systems, it’s understandable that they cannot utilize each other’s docking stations, even though both devices still use USB-C ports to connect to their respective hardware. Although this news might not be surprising to many, it could disappoint some users. Notably, Nintendo has increased the price of the Switch 2 Dock Set in the United States, and neither Switch 2 users nor original Switch owners will have the option to bypass this cost with older alternatives or use an upgraded dock, respectively.

Apart from the dock, there are other pieces of new equipment that won’t function on the initial Nintendo Switch consoles. For instance, earlier this month, Nintendo announced that both the Switch 2 GameCube controller and certain Switch 2 games cannot be utilized with the first generation Switch due to missing features that other non-GameCube titles might employ. Similarly, while the original Pro Controller is compatible with the new console, it may not function fully on the Switch 2 Pro Controller, which can only be used on the Switch 2 system.
Regardless of whether its accessories work with it or not, the Switch 2 has become popular among gamers, as suggested by the fact that its pre-orders are selling out quickly. Despite some debate about its price, retailers are saying that Switch 2 pre-orders have reached record levels, and many people have had trouble getting one because of the high demand. If you’re one of the lucky ones who managed to place a pre-order, just remember that you won’t be able to use all the hardware on both your old and new consoles.
