AEW Double or Nothing is the Future of AEW Video Games

Many fans were disappointed with AEW Fight Forever. While it had some good qualities, like a retro gameplay style, it had significant problems. The graphics looked dated, there was no commentary, and wrestler entrances felt incomplete. Beyond that, the game suffered from a frustrating pin system, a limited selection of match types, and a character creator that didn’t meet expectations. Fans also missed a franchise mode similar to “My GM,” but the biggest issue for many was the limited roster of wrestlers.

When AEW Fight Forever was first released, its selection of wrestlers was decent. However, the roster has become noticeably outdated over time. Keeping wrestler lists current is crucial for sports games because rosters change frequently, and professional wrestling is no exception. Fight Forever hasn’t been updated in years, and it shows. Seeing CM Punk wrestle in a digital AEW ring in 2026 feels strange given his well-known departure from the company. It’s also odd that Danhausen, who publicly criticized AEW both during and after his contract, was included as expensive downloadable content. Many of today’s biggest stars are missing from the game, and looking at the lineup for the 2026 Double or Nothing event makes it clear how different the next AEW game will probably be.

Some of Double or Nothing’s Biggest Matches Can’t Be Done in Fight Forever

AEW’s Double or Nothing 2026 Match Card is as Follows:

  • Darby Allin vs. MJF (Hair vs. Title Match)
  • Thekla vs. Hikaru Shida vs. Kris Statlander vs. Jamie Hayter (AEW Women’s World Championship)
  • Kyle O’Reilly vs. Jon Moxley (AEW Continental Championship)
  • Konosuke Takeshita vs. Kazuchika Okada (International Championship)
  • Cage and Cope vs. FTR (I Quit Match for the AEW World Tag Team Championship — if Copeland and Christian lose, they retire as a team)
  • Jericho, The Hurt Syndicate, and The Elite vs. The Demand, The Dogs, and The Don Callis Family (Stadium Stampede)
  • Samoa Joe vs. Will Ospreay (Owen Tournament Quarterfinal)
  • Bandido vs. Swerve Strickland (Owen Tournament Quarterfinal)
  • Athena vs. Mina Shirikawa (Owen Tournament Quarterfinal)

Looking at this card reveals a significant problem: seven out of nine matches aren’t possible in the Fight Forever game unless players heavily customize characters. Key wrestlers like Will Ospreay, Athena, and Mina aren’t included, eliminating several planned matches. The women’s four-way match is impossible without Thekla, and the Stadium Stampede can’t happen due to the absence of Ricochet, The Demand, The Dogs, Mark Davis, and the Hurt Syndicate. Matches planned for Kyle O’Reilly and Bandido are also out, impacting Moxley and Swerve respectively. Even top Japanese wrestlers like Takeshita and the Rainmaker aren’t featured in the game.

The current AEW game only allows for matches featuring the Men’s World Championship and the World Tag Team Championship, and even those don’t quite feel accurate. For example, MJF’s character model looks like an older version of himself, from when he first joined the company. Similarly, Christian Cage’s current, popular character – where he plays a father figure – isn’t represented in the game, making those matches feel off. This issue appears throughout the game with many wrestlers. Several stars have changed their look or character since the game was made – Jungle Boy isn’t as young as he appears, Kris Statlander no longer portrays an alien, Jamie Hayter has a completely different style, and Jericho has gone through several character changes. This also affects wrestlers not featured on the Double or Nothing card, like Toni Storm, who has fully embraced her ‘Timeless’ persona.

Double or Nothing 2026 really shows how much AEW has grown since the Fight Forever game came out, and how much potential the next game has. Fans are excited about being able to play as stars like Bandido, Jon Moxley’s Death Rider persona, and Thekla, who are all making a big impact now. Beyond those featured at DoN, many other deserving wrestlers – including Alex Windsor, Mercedes Mone, Billie Starkz, Willow Nightingale, Brody King, Roderick Strong, Tomasso Ciampa, Mark Briscoe, and Kyle Fletcher – should be included. AEW has changed a lot since its first video game, and the next one needs to reflect all the improvements, not just with a bigger roster.

The next AEW video game is a great opportunity to offer better downloadable content. Similar to what the WWE 2K series has done, they could release themed packs of wrestlers. For example, a “Legends” pack could include stars like Brodie Lee, Owen Hart, Jay Briscoe, Bryan Danielson, Jeff Jarrett, and Taz. Another pack could focus on Ring of Honor, featuring wrestlers like Nigel McGuinness, Jay Lethal, Lee Moriarty, Athena, Billie Starkz, and Blake Christian.

Double or Nothing’s Strong Stories Prove a True Cover Star for AEW’s Next Game is Viable

Look, I see a lot of negativity about AEW online, but honestly, they’ve told some amazing stories over the years. Think about the intense rivalry between Hangman and Swerve, or the whole storyline with Mariah May and Toni Storm – seriously good stuff. And it’s continuing with Double or Nothing 2026! It feels like there are a bunch of potential stars they could build a game around, and I’m hoping for a story mode that really showcases them. When Fight Forever came out, it made sense to cram as many wrestlers onto the cover as possible, since it was the first AEW game. But now, after a few years, AEW has built up a real history and launched some incredible careers. They’ve earned the right to focus on the biggest stars and tell their stories in a game.

MJF is the perfect choice to be the first solo star on an AEW game cover. He’s one of the best talkers in professional wrestling, and a highly skilled performer in the ring. MJF has built a unique villain persona by staying in character both on social media and in interviews, and he’s proven you don’t need WWE to succeed in acting. Putting him on the game cover would almost certainly boost sales, as he’s become a major star by believing in himself and earning the respect of even rival fans.

AEW Games and Tony Khan have another excellent choice for their next game cover: Darby Allin, MJF’s opponent at Double or Nothing. The current champion has had an incredible run lately, consistently delivering exciting and high-quality matches. While MJF would likely succeed in WWE, Darby embodies the distinct style and performers that AEW is known for—the kind WWE wouldn’t take a chance on. Darby, along with wrestlers like Eddie Kingston and Mark Briscoe, has connected with fans by being authentic. This individuality is especially valuable considering WWE’s tendency to favor a specific, uniform image. Featuring Darby on the game cover would be a fitting tribute to that unique AEW spirit.

AEW has so many great wrestlers who could be the face of their video game. Whether it’s top star Jon Moxley, the popular Will Ospreay with his compelling storyline, the intense Swerve Strickland, the relatable Hangman Adam Page, or a legend like Sting, focusing a special game mode and cover on any of them would be a smart move – something the WWE 2K series does well. If they also include a large roster of wrestlers and a robust character creator to let players create their own stars, AEW could finally deliver a game that lives up to the quality of their wrestling shows.
