With the season halfway through, it’s becoming apparent that the first season of Akane-banashi focuses on Akane’s last hurdles in high school. It’s easily one of the best anime series this year, and its upcoming release on Netflix worldwide could bring it the attention it deserves.

Because Kyoji encouraged her to prioritize school, Akane has been studying hard for her exams. Once she graduates this year, she’ll officially become an apprentice under Shiguma Arakawa.

Akane Has to Prove Her Resolve to Become a Rakugoka

After watching the earlier episodes, I didn’t expect to see Akane’s high school life explored. But I was happily surprised! Episode 5 of Akane-banashi didn’t just show her time in school, it portrayed it as a difficult and demanding experience.

Akane is really trying to avoid failing her exams, and she’s frustrated with the idea that artists are expected to struggle academically. However, her teacher isn’t supportive of her pursuing Rakugo, especially since Akane doesn’t have a plan B, like going to college. The teacher is concerned because she previously had a student who dreamed of being a comedian but wasn’t successful and has faced hardship finding work ever since.

Akane attempts to satisfy her teacher, but doesn’t succeed. The teacher insists on helping Akane choose a college. When Akane realizes she can’t change her teacher’s mind about pursuing Rakugo, her classmate Jumbo – who has known her since middle school – privately asks the teacher to see Akane perform. He’s successful, and after watching Akane at the Rakugo Cafe, the teacher understands Akane’s dedication and accepts her chosen career path.

The Reason Why Issho Arakawa Expelled Akane’s Father

During the show, Jumbo explains that when Akane’s father was removed from the Rakugo world, it caused a lot of public attention. Although newspapers heavily criticized Issho Arakawa for this decision, surprisingly, his audience actually increased. It’s not uncommon for people to use the media, even negative attention, to promote themselves, though this tactic can sometimes fail. If this is what happened with Issho, we’ll probably find out more about his motives later on.

A New Rakugo Challenge Emerges

The episode concludes with the teacher fully supporting Akane’s choice and encouraging her to focus on her future goals. A school-wide Rakugo competition, the Karaku Cup, is coming up soon, and it’s a perfect chance for Akane to showcase her talent. However, there’s a twist – Issho Arakawa will be one of the judges. The next episode will probably show the competition itself, or at least the initial rounds.

The next episode comes out on May 9, 2026. You can watch it on the official YouTube channel throughout North and South America with subtitles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The first two episodes of the series will premiere worldwide on Netflix on May 17th, with dubbed versions available. After the initial release, Netflix plans to add one new episode each week. With the manga being a hit in Japan, Akane-banashi has the potential to become popular with Netflix viewers, especially since the animation quality has been excellent. While it hasn’t received as much hype as Witch Hat Atelier, it’s still considered one of the best shows this season.
