Assassin’s Creed Hexe is More Closely Connected to Black Flag Resynced Than You Thought

Ubisoft is heavily promoting Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which is expected to launch this summer. Recent events, like a showcase and a Q&A on Reddit, have revealed lots of information about the game’s graphics, gameplay, and improvements to Edward Kenway’s abilities. However, all this attention also reminds people of the original Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, and that nostalgia is likely to create interest in Assassin’s Creed Hexe.

Okay, so Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is a seriously beloved game, and this remake is definitely riding that wave of excitement. It’s not been flawless so far, but honestly, it’s looking like a remake that does the original justice. What makes Black Flag so good – that feeling of adventure and freedom – I’m already seeing in Resynced, and it looks like Assassin’s Creed Hexe is going for the same vibe. It makes sense, since both the original Black Flag and Hexe were made by Ubisoft Montreal. It’s cool to see that same spirit being carried over, you know?

Piracy and beliefs in witchcraft were often linked in seafaring stories of the 1600s. Pirate trials frequently happened at the same time as witch hunts, so it wouldn’t be unexpected if the upcoming AC Hexe game also explored this connection. Some fans speculate that the game’s main character, Elsa, might even be related to Edward Kenway, a pirate from previous Assassin’s Creed games.

From Black Flag (2013) to Resynced to Hexe

Both Black Flag (2013) and Hexe were created by the same team at Ubisoft Montreal, meaning they likely share many similarities beyond what’s immediately obvious. While many developers probably moved from Black Flag to work on Hexe, several key individuals are also contributing to the new game.

Two key figures leading the development of the new Assassin’s Creed game, Hexe, are Jean Guesdon and Darby McDevitt. Guesdon took over as creative director after Clint Hocking’s departure and now heads all content for the franchise. He previously led the creative direction of the popular Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. McDevitt, a returning veteran of Ubisoft, is the Narrative Director for Hexe. He also has a long history with the series, including work on Black Flag. He’s even contributed new scenes to a remastered version of Black Flag, which strengthens the connection between that game and Hexe, supporting theories about a shared theme of piracy and witchcraft.

It’s difficult to identify most developers who work on games, and the team working on Assassin’s Creed Hexe has seen changes – around 50 developers were moved to work on other projects, making it harder to track who’s involved. However, as the Ubisoft Singapore team aims to build on the success of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, it’s likely that some of the original developers are now contributing to Assassin’s Creed Hexe and want to recapture that earlier success.

It’s worth remembering that Assassin’s Creed Hexe isn’t an open-world game like Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, or Shadows. It’s a completely different experience, which is really exciting. I’m even noticing some interesting links between Black Flag and Hexe, similar to the connection between piracy and witchcraft.
