Earthbending is a powerful ability that requires both strength and determination – it’s not easy to master. While Avatar Aang quickly learned air and waterbending, he found moving earth much more challenging. Since then, earthbending has become a crucial fighting style throughout both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
The most powerful Earthbenders in Avatar: The Last Airbender were incredibly impressive, capable of seemingly moving mountains with their control over the earth. Aside from past Avatars like Kyoshi and Roku, only a few Earthbenders have demonstrated this level of skill, including those who can bend metal or lava.
10. The Boulder Favors Showmanship Over Fundamentals
The Boulder Puts the Hurt in the Dirt
Before professional pro bending became popular in Republic City, the Earth Kingdom held a competition called Earth Rumble. It was there that Aang and his friends first saw The Boulder, a particularly showy and entertaining Earthbender. Sokka was a big fan, but Aang believed The Boulder relied more on brute strength than skill.
I’ve always thought The Boulder didn’t really stand a chance against someone like Toph Beifong, even outside of a formal competition. That’s why, in my opinion, he’s generally considered the weakest of the really powerful Earthbenders in Avatar: The Last Airbender. He’s definitely strong and fights with a lot of intensity, but he tends to be a bit reckless and leaves openings for his opponents.
9. Aang Learned Earthbending But Never Felt Truly Attuned to It
Aang Still Favors Airbending Above All
Avatars are usually incredibly powerful benders, and when an Avatar masters all four elements, they often find some are easier to learn than others. Aang, for example, was a natural at airbending, which also helped him quickly become skilled in waterbending – much to Katara’s delight. However, he struggled more with earthbending and firebending, as those elements didn’t quite fit his personality.
Aang struggled with both firebending and earthbending. He preferred a more adaptable approach and found it difficult to master the forceful style of fire, or the solid, unyielding nature of earth, even with Toph’s guidance. While he showed some skill with earthbending during the rescue of Earth King Kuei, he generally wasn’t as strong with it as dedicated earthbenders were throughout the series.
8. Bolin Can Create Moats of Lava and Bends Earth as a Spot
Bolin Still Can’t Bend Metal, However
Toph was the original Earthbender with Avatar Aang’s group. Later, when Avatar Korra created her team, Bolin took on the role of Earthbender, following in Toph’s footsteps. While Bolin didn’t reach Toph’s level of skill, he did manage to impress her with his lava bending, a technique he picked up during a fight with Ghazan from the Red Lotus.
Honestly, before a certain point, Bolin didn’t quite live up to his potential. His earthbending had a tough time dealing with serious threats – things like the Equalists’ chi-blocking, P’Li’s massive explosions, or even Ming-Hua’s waterbending attacks. He is really good at hitting targets with earth, like those earth disks or pebbles he throws, and that’s cool, but it wasn’t exactly the kind of power that made him a legend, you know?
7. Lin Beifong Honed Her Bending as the Republic City Police Chief
Lin Favors Metal Over Raw Earth
Toph’s daughters, Lin and Suyin, both bend earth and metal, unlike their mother who originally invented metalbending. Because metalbending was already known in their time, they could learn it from the start, and with the world quickly becoming more industrial, it’s clear why Lin prefers using metal.
Lin is a skilled Earthbender, benefiting from years of training and experience. However, she’s particularly known for her metalbending abilities, which are essential to her work as the proactive chief of police in Republic City.
6. Suyin Beifong Turned Bending Into an Elegant Art in Zaofu
Like Her Half-Sister, Suyin Prefers Metal
Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender often praise Lin, and many of those same strengths apply to her half-sister, Suyin. Both benefited from training with Toph and grew up in a time when metalbending was becoming more common. However, Suyin seems to have also taught herself a lot, and that independent learning clearly helped her succeed.
As a police officer, Lin focused on practical earthbending and metalbending techniques. Meanwhile, Suyin traveled the world, learning from different cultures and experiences, which shaped both who she was and how she bent metal. This made Suyin a highly skilled metalbender – more graceful and inventive than Lin. However, she didn’t possess the same sheer strength as the most powerful earthbenders in the series.
5. Korra Loves Earthbending, Including Metalbending
Earth Suits Korra’s Stubborn Will in Battle
Korra, from the Avatar franchise, overcame many powerful enemies by mastering all four elements. While she didn’t seem to prefer one over another, some elements worked better with her personality than others. Airbending didn’t quite fit her forceful approach, but fire and earthbending felt natural, matching her fiery temper and strong will. Though it’s hard to say if earthbending was her strongest skill, her power with it was undeniable.

High Score: 0 —
Korra is incredibly powerful, capable of creating massive shockwaves with a single strike, like she did during her fight with Tarrlok. She also quickly learned to adapt her earthbending to the faster, more controlled style used in pro bending, which impressed her teammate, Bolin. Korra became a skilled metalbender very quickly, amazing both Bolin and Suyin with her abilities. While she’s excellent at it, her metalbending isn’t quite as refined or powerful as Kuvira’s.
4. Ghazan Destroyed the Entire Eastern Air Temple With His Lava
Ghazan Also Used Lava to Destroy Himself
The Red Lotus group stood out as Korra’s opponents because they didn’t just use bloodbending – they were all masters of unique bending styles. For example, Ghazan was an incredibly talented Earthbender who specialized in lavabending, preferring to manipulate lava instead of regular earth. While he could bend earth normally, lavabending was what set him apart and made him a truly formidable force.
In Book Three: Change, Ghazan was a terrifying opponent who could quickly turn the battle in his favor by creating lava. Bolin pointed out that fighting Ghazan was tricky for traditional Earthbenders – when they attacked, he’d just melt their rock into more lava to use against them. Ghazan demonstrated his incredible strength by destroying the Eastern Air Temple and even breaching a portion of Ba Sing Se’s enormous walls.
3. Kuvira is the Most Elegant Earthbender to Ever Live
Kuvira’s Technology Makes Metalbending Feel Like the Future
Kuvira, the final major villain in The Legend of Korra, was the most powerful metalbender and Earthbender of her era. She honed her incredible skills learning from masters like Suyin in Zaofu. Beyond just a bending ability, metal symbolized Kuvira’s vision for a controlling future, one enforced by metal vehicles and machines under her leadership.
Kuvira, like other metalbenders, can manipulate earth, but she specializes in metal, and for good reason. Metal is readily available – she even carries it on her uniform – and she controls it with incredible skill and artistry. Her battle against Korra in Zaofu, where she used metal strips to great effect, is particularly memorable. She also managed to defeat both Suyin and Lin Beifong, proving her mastery of the technique.
2. Toph Beifong Uses Earthbending as an Extension of Herself
Toph Wears Earthbending Like a Second Skin
Toph Beifong, a legendary Earthbender, was incredibly strong throughout her entire life. Even into her eighties, she still fought, though she didn’t enjoy the aches and pains that came with it. From a young age, Toph was already a master Earthbender because she bent earth as an extension of herself, not just as a skill. She focused on perfecting the core techniques of earthbending, unlike some other Earthbenders who prioritized showy moves. Toph didn’t care about flashiness – she just wanted to be fundamentally strong.
Toph is an incredibly powerful and innovative Earthbender, renowned for her accuracy, strength, and unique fighting style. She developed tremorsense and invented metalbending, and single-handedly defeated all the competitors in the Earth Rumble 6 tournament. She also played a crucial role in helping Aang defeat hundreds of Earth King Kuei’s soldiers. Toph is fiercely proud of being the original and most skilled metalbender, constantly highlighting her expertise – whether bragging to Xin Fu or angrily rebuking Kuvira for tarnishing the reputation of metalbending.
1. King Bumi Fought Off an Occupying Fire Nation Army on His Own
Bumi Was a Powerhouse Even Beyond Age 100
While Toph is widely known as the most inventive Earthbender, King Bumi of Omashu is actually more powerful. He’s incredibly strong, even without the ability to metalbend, and has demonstrated amazing feats of earthbending. Like Toph, Bumi has a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of earthbending, including the concept of neutral jing.
During the eclipse, Bumi dramatically freed Omashu from its metal prison, instantly proving himself the most powerful Earthbender in the world. He cleared the city of invaders and their structures in mere minutes. Viewers will remember him effortlessly throwing large buildings aside and even toppling the enormous statue of Fire Lord Ozai with relative ease. Remarkably, he accomplished all of this at an age even older than Toph Beifong’s in The Legend of Korra.
