Following a strong launch and some challenges afterward, 2026 looks like a make-or-break year for Battlefield 6. DICE and Battlefield Studios know they need to deliver a great experience that fans have been waiting for, and they’ve already shared a detailed plan for the year. Season 3 will be especially important, as it will largely determine the future direction and success of the game.
It’s tough for any game to really succeed, especially a live-service title that’s still evolving, but we recently got an early look at Season 3 of Battlefield 6, called Warlords: Supremacy, before its May 12th release. After playing through the first part of the season, particularly on the newer Railway to Golmud map, it’s clear that DICE has been paying attention to player feedback and actively improving the game. While it’s impossible to predict the future, this preview suggests Season 3 could finally help Battlefield 6 live up to its promise, and there are several reasons why.
A Game That’s Been Fighting for Breathing Room
Since its release, one of the biggest complaints about Battlefield 6 has been the size of its maps. They feel smaller and focus too much on soldiers on foot, making vehicle combat and long-distance fighting less important. This is disappointing for a series known for its large-scale battles with tanks, planes, and helicopters – the kind of epic warfare fans expect.
All of these vehicles are included in the game, except for anything related to naval combat – we’ll discuss that later. However, longtime fans have really missed the large, open maps that allowed these vehicles to be used effectively. Along with a slow progression system and the lack of a traditional server browser, this is the biggest issue the Battlefield community has with the game right now. The first phase of Season 3, and its new map, directly addresses this feedback. While it’s a more cautious approach, the map isn’t holding back.
Railway to Golmud Is the Map Battlefield 6 Has Been Missing
The new Railway to Golmud map in Battlefield 6 is a fresh take on the popular Golmud Railway from Battlefield 4, and it’s significantly larger than any map in the game so far. While it’s been a while since I played Battlefield 4, this reimagining feels accurate – the map has been substantially changed for the better. It now features much more airspace for air combat, increased height and more vertical options at key locations, and generally better cover for infantry. The result is a truly massive area, divided into recognizable combat zones like a village, power station, industrial area, and the railway itself, but with more diverse and interesting tactical options than before.
The highlight of the map is definitely the fully working train, which acts as a key capture point. Like in Battlefield 4, it constantly changes the battle dynamics in the center of the map. It’s a welcome addition because while Battlefield 6 has some destruction, the large-scale environmental changes—known as “Levolution” in BF4—aren’t as prominent anymore. The train really brings back that sense of a constantly shifting battlefield, impacting the entire map.
During my matches, both sides were constantly changing their positions as jets battled for control of the skies and tanks clashed around the train tracks. Helicopters briefly struggled with new obstacles in the air, but quickly became a major threat to ground troops – which was great to see. This map felt like the first since Battlefield 1 to truly capture the epic, large-scale feeling of classic Battlefield games. Every type of vehicle felt important, and players had plenty of options, whether they were on foot, in vehicles, or using a combination of both.
New Weapons That Fit the Map Like a Glove
I highlighted infantry combat because Season 3 Phase 1 also added two new weapons that really fit the Railway to Golmud map. The M16A4 assault rifle was excellent for medium-to-long-range fights around the village and industrial area, making it one of the best in its class. While the L115 sniper rifle took some getting used to due to its bullet speed, it was incredibly satisfying to use accurately. Landing headshots across the open areas or from the radio tower felt fantastic—it was some of the most fun I’ve had in the game so far. The fact that both weapons integrated so well with the map suggests a more thoughtful design approach.
A Meaningful Step in the Right Direction
Just to clarify, this preview only showed a glimpse of what’s coming in Season 3’s first phase. The full season is a much larger update. Phase 2 will introduce the Cairo Bazaar map – a revamped version of the Grand Bazaar from Battlefield 3 – and bring back the Obliteration game mode for All Out Warfare. Players will also get two new weapons: the RPK-74M machine gun and the PP-19 SMG. Plus, Ranked Play is coming to REDSEC’s Battle Royale Quads, which is the first step in Battlefield Studios’ plan to build a growing competitive scene.
After looking at everything, I think Season 3 will be a bigger improvement than I initially thought. I’m a little concerned that the developers are being too cautious by bringing back old maps instead of creating completely new ones, but it seems like this season will address many of the biggest complaints about the game and set things up for future updates. Looking even further ahead, Season 4 is bringing back naval combat and a map that’s even bigger than the existing one, which shows the developers are aiming for even larger-scale experiences. Considering the game has faced some challenges since launch, it’s encouraging to see a promising future – and that’s really important for a game like Battlefield 6 that’s constantly being updated.
