Bleach: The Strongest Melee-Type Zanpakuto

As I’ve watched the world of Bleach, I’ve noticed every Soul Reaper carries a special sword called a Zanpakuto. Each of these swords has a first release form, known as Shikai. But the truly powerful Soul Reapers can push their Zanpakuto even further, unlocking a second, much stronger form called Bankai. While most Zanpakuto are designed for ranged attacks, there aren’t many focused on close combat, and among those, some are definitely stronger than others. It seems the most powerful melee-type Zanpakuto belongs to one of the Captains, though several other Captains wield incredibly strong swords as well.

Zanpakuto designed for close-quarters combat excel in hand-to-hand fighting. While a few can launch energy attacks, most rely on physical strikes. These weapons can inflict significant damage, and some are powerful enough to cut or even destroy incredibly powerful beings, like gods.

8. Gegetsuburi Becomes A Medieval Weapon With Impressive Striking Power

Can Perform Crushing Ranged Attacks

Gegetsuburi was introduced during the Soul Society Arc of Bleach. It’s an unusual weapon for a member of the Stealth Force, who usually focus on spying and assassination. While Lieutenant Marechiyo Omaeda hasn’t mastered Bankai, his Shikai transforms Gegetsuburi into a large, spiked ball connected to a long chain. This flail is effective for attacks from a distance, but Omaeda can also wield it defensively to block incoming attacks.

Gegetsuburi managed to defend against Ggio Vega’s Resurreccion, but it doesn’t seem powerful enough to stop attacks from stronger opponents like Captain-level Shinigami, as Ichigo easily broke through it with one punch. However, Gegetsuburi can cause serious damage to less powerful foes if Omaeda connects a direct hit. For example, it was able to briefly knock out an Arrancar Fraccion named Nirgge Parduoc, even while he was in his Resurreccion form.

The latest developments in Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War have shown Lieutenant Yachiru Kusajishi’s Shikai. Fans increasingly believe Yachiru is the physical form of Kenpachi Zaraki’s Zanpakuto, making it logical that she would develop her own. As one of Bleach‘s most powerful characters, Kenpachi is known for his incredible strength and cutting ability, so it fits that a Zanpakuto born from his spirit would also possess immense power.

Yachiru’s Zanpakuto, Sanpo Kenju, takes the form of two separate creatures: a large, Hollow-like being with a dagger, and a smaller, furry one wielding a cleaver. What makes Sanpo Kenju unique is that its attacks are nearly impossible to avoid. The smaller creature attacks just before Yachiru, and the larger one immediately after, guaranteeing at least one hit. When Sanpo Kenju is active, it can create deep cracks in the ground and is powerful enough to wound even a strong opponent like Guenael Lee, whose spiritual energy is comparable to a Soul Reaper Captain.

After the war with the Quincies, Ikkaku takes the position of Lieutenant in Squad 11. He’s powerful enough to be a Captain, especially since he’s already mastered Bankai. His Shikai, Hozukimaru, takes the form of a long, divided spear, but it can’t perform any Kido spells. While very effective in hand-to-hand fighting, it struggles to seriously injure stronger opponents like Sternritter or Arrancar who have activated their Resurreccion – it can barely even leave a mark on a Resurreccion-using Arrancar.

Luckily, his Bankai, Ryumon Hozukimaru, is much more powerful at cutting things. It can easily slice through the incredibly durable Hierro skin of an Arrancar, even when enhanced by their Resurrección. This Bankai appears as a large combination of a monk’s spade, a cleaver, and an axe head, all linked together with chains. The only drawback is that it takes time for Ryumon Hozukimaru to reach its full power, but once it does, it can cut through almost any opponent.

5. Kazeshini Can Tear Through Enemies With Its Sharp Scythe Blades

Is Designed To Immobilize And Reap Opponents

Shuhei Hisagi doesn’t particularly like the appearance of his Zanpakuto, finding it resembles a fearsome weapon meant for collecting souls. However, he’s still become highly skilled in using its special ability, Shikai. When activated, Kazeshini transforms into two scythe-like blades, each with an additional reversed blade. These scythes are linked by a long steel chain, allowing Shuhei to attack from a distance and also to bind or hold back his enemies during a fight.

Kazeshini’s Shikai is powerful enough to defeat opponents like Findorr Calius, but it struggles against the stronger abilities of Quincy Sternritter. After the Thousand-Year Blood War, Shuhei unlocks Bankai, which is considered one of the most impressive Bankai in the series. His Bankai, Kazeshini Fushi no Kojyo, has the potential to defeat Captains or Sternritter if Shuhei continues to grow stronger. It works by creating a large sphere of chains that bind both Shuhei and his opponent. They are then caught in a cycle of death and resurrection until one of them completely runs out of spiritual energy and dies for good.

4. Zabimaru Has The Power To Turn Captain-Level Opponents To Dust

Possesses Various Techniques Designed For Melee Combat

Zabimaru is the Zanpakuto of Squad 6 Lieutenant Renji Abarai, and it holds the distinction of being the first Shikai fully shown in the series. When released, Zabimaru transforms into a longer blade made of six segments, but it can extend to create a seemingly endless number of additional segments. These segments are sharp enough to pierce even Arrancar, and Renji can skillfully use them to trap opponents and slam them into their surroundings.

During his training at the Soul King’s Palace, Renji unlocked the full potential of his Zanpakuto, achieving Zabimaru’s complete Bankai form. This manifests as a snake-skull gauntlet on his right arm and a monkey-like forearm on his left, with a blade extending from the gauntlet and spine-like projections adding to its form. Zabimaru’s main attack, Zaga Teppo, involves piercing an enemy with the blade, twisting it, and then unleashing Renji’s spiritual energy, which is powerful enough to destroy even Captain-level opponents like Mask De Masculine.

Watching Shinso unleash his Bankai, Kamishini no Yari, was truly frightening. The spear’s blade moves unbelievably fast – we’re talking 500 times the speed of sound! It could slice right through an entire city before anyone even realizes what’s happening. But the real danger isn’t just the speed; it’s what happens after the blade strikes. It stabs so quickly that it leaves a tiny piece of itself inside the opponent. That fragment then releases a poison that systematically breaks down their body from the inside. Honestly, it felt like something that could have taken down a powerful enemy like Sosuke Aizen, but thankfully, the Hogyoku had already given him immortality and the ability to regenerate.

Its Full Power Has Not Been Revealed, But It Can Destroy Someone As Powerful As Yhwach

Ichigo Kurosaki, being the central character, naturally wields a very powerful Zanpakuto called Zangetsu. Zangetsu has changed forms over time, and its true power was unlocked during Ichigo’s training at the Soul King’s Palace. In its true Shikai form, it appears as two black blades – one a standard sword size and the other much smaller, resembling a cleaver. While Ichigo still uses Getsuga Tensho as his main attack, he can now also perform Getsuga Jujisho, a powerful, cross-shaped energy blast capable of severely wounding even the strongest opponents, like Captain-level fighters and Sternritter.

When Ichigo reaches his Bankai, Tensa Zangetsu transforms into a form resembling a khyber knife, effectively merging both of its blades into one. The full extent of this form’s power remains a mystery, but its enhanced Getsuga Tensho was strong enough to defeat Yhwach, a villain with god-like abilities. Even though Yhwach’s protective ability, The Almighty, was disabled at the time, Tensa Zangetsu delivering a finishing blow was still a remarkable feat.

Kenpachi Zaraki leads Squad 11 and is considered by many to be the most skilled swordsman in Bleach. For much of the series, he held back his full potential, but he unleashed it during his fight with Yachiru Unohana. This battle allowed him to discover his Zanpakuto’s name and unlock its full power, including both Shikai and Bankai forms. With Nozarashi now awakened, Kenpachi can cut through almost anything.

Nozarashi, Kenpachi’s Zanpakuto, has two incredibly powerful forms. Its Shikai creates a huge, unbelievably sharp cleaver capable of slicing through anything, even space itself. When Kenpachi activates Bankai, Nozarashi shrinks into a smaller blade, but its cutting power becomes even greater. However, Bankai also transforms Kenpachi into a savage, almost mindless warrior driven by a thirst for battle. With Bankai, a single swing can cut through even incredibly powerful opponents like Gerald Valkyrie, though Valkyrie’s unique ability saved him from being instantly killed. In a direct fight, both Nozarashi’s Shikai and Bankai are capable of overpowering any defense and would likely destroy other close-combat Bankai, such as Tensa Zangetsu.
