Many open-world games let you play with friends, but simply having that option doesn’t guarantee it’s a good experience. Take Donkey Kong Bananza for instance – it’s a fantastic game, but playing with a second player isn’t as fun because they don’t have much to do, even though it’s still a welcome addition.

Great co-op in open-world games requires a good balance so all players feel rewarded. Games like Saints Row: The Third and Elden Ring achieve this. We’ll be ranking them based on both the core game itself and how well co-op is integrated.

The open world of Elden Ring is perfect for playing with friends. While FromSoftware games have always let you cooperate, Elden Ring improved on this by allowing you to summon up to two friends to join your game anywhere in the world. Together, you could fight enemies, discover hidden areas, and tackle the game’s challenging bosses.

After defeating a boss, the player group would temporarily break up, but players could easily reconnect with their friends. While a bit unusual for a cooperative game, once players got used to it, they preferred exploring with companions because it made everything simpler – even dealing with challenging invaders. Fans of the main game should also enjoy Elden Ring Nightreign, the roguelike side story, which also limited co-op to three players.

In Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, the action moved from New York City to Washington, D.C. as a virus outbreak occurred. Players teamed up with up to three friends online to explore the city, find better gear, fight enemies, and complete missions. While it’s a shooter with RPG elements, success depends on strategy and teamwork – simply rushing into combat won’t work.

The game features different character classes called Specializations, each with unique skills and abilities. For example, Sharpshooters excel at long-distance combat, and Demolitionists are best at taking on large groups of enemies. Teamwork is key – using cover and coordinating flanks are always effective strategies. A challenging eight-player co-op mode is also available for endgame players. As you’d expect from a Tom Clancy game, cooperative play is a major focus.

Grand Theft Auto 5 came out in 2013, and the main game hasn’t changed much since then. However, its online multiplayer mode, Grand Theft Auto Online, has been consistently updated with new missions. When players log in, they’ll usually find around twenty-nine other people exploring the city. While they can team up for spontaneous fun, there are also specific missions that are designed for groups of varying sizes.

You can play with anywhere from two to eight people. For instance, in “Truck Together,” two teams of four compete to steal and protect trucks, which requires good teamwork because the game throws a lot of challenges at you. “No Hay Bronca” is another mission with changing objectives – from delivering packages to destroying vehicles – and supports up to four players. Grand Theft Auto Online has tons of exciting heists to complete with friends, or you can simply cause some chaos around the city if you prefer.

Minecraft is a great game to play with friends without needing fast reflexes or intense gameplay, though it does have some combat. This is why it’s been a popular, relaxing game for people of all ages for years. You can play locally with up to four friends on consoles like the PS5, or online with up to eight. Setting up your own server can lead to even more unique experiences, but generally, the more people playing, the more unpredictable and fun things become.

Minecraft is like a game with no set objectives. Players start in a randomly generated world and are free to do whatever they want – whether that’s digging, crafting, or building a community with others. Its open-ended nature is what makes Minecraft a continually engaging multiplayer experience.

While Saints Row: The Third currently has the fewest players online – only two – that’s perfectly alright. The game’s entire story mode is enjoyable with just one friend, and adding more players would likely make the already wild and unpredictable experience too chaotic. It’s a game packed with bizarre activities, like wrestling matches, VR simulations where you play as a toilet with guns, and even content for mature audiences.

Playing with a friend makes the game consistently hilarious, even when you shouldn’t be laughing. The cooperative mode also carried over to this updated version. If you’re new to the game, Saints Row: The Third is similar to Grand Theft Auto, but it offers so much more. In some ways, it actually became more over-the-top and fun than Grand Theft Auto years ago, though it doesn’t have the same kind of elaborate online missions – but that’s a discussion for another time.

A big part of the fun for many Halo fans is playing the game with friends. When Halo Infinite came out in 2021, players had to wait almost a year before they could enjoy the four-player co-op mode. Because Halo Infinite was the first Halo game with a truly open world, playing with others was especially helpful. The open world meant enemies were better fortified, and even the powerful Master Chief could find some areas too difficult to conquer on his own.

Players who stuck with the game for nearly a year found a much-improved experience. They could now enjoy the entire campaign with up to four friends, including all the optional side missions and exploration. While the shooting still wasn’t perfect, the grappling hook was a fun addition to both fighting and getting around. It might not be the greatest Halo co-op campaign ever, but it’s definitely the best one set in an open world.
