As a seasoned researcher with years of experience in the digital realm, I find the allegations against the former professional gamer and cybersecurity analyst quite intriguing. It seems that the line between gaming, cybersecurity, and crypto scams can sometimes blur, much like the pixels on a high-definition screen.
Investigator ZachXBT, known for his work in the cryptocurrency world, has pointed fingers at a previous professional gamer and cybersecurity analyst, alleging they were involved in the theft of approximately $3.5 million from various memecoins scams. ZachXBT’s detailed examination revealed a link between this Australian individual and nine different crypto heists.
Former Pro Gamer Turned Crypto Scammer
On Wednesday, ZachXBT claimed that a former professional Fortnite player named Serpent was involved in stealing and gambling funds from various memecoin scams that took place this year. In a tweet, the crypto detective revealed the link between wallets associated with Serpent and those related to the cryptocurrency scams.
The investigator shared that the wallets linked to the previous eSports player had a significant association with various accounts, which were targeted in X and Instagram account hijackings (ATOs), over the past couple of months.
Involved are the social media handles of McDonald’s and Kabosu, Usher, Wiz Khalifa, Andy Ayrey, SPX 6900, as well as three other X accounts on Instagram. The hacks led to the unauthorized acquisition of $3.5 million from unsuspecting investors who purchased fraudulent memecoins released through Solana’s token launchpad, Pump.fun.
For example, the McDonald’s virtual token, GRIMACE, attained a market value of $25 million before it was hacked, with around $700,000 being transferred to two separate wallets. Analysis of blockchain data revealed that these wallets were connected to others implicated in eight additional fraudulent activities, which channeled the stolen funds via multiple transactions, ultimately ending up in a casino deposit address, Ecb5vs.
In March 2024, the crypto investigator observed that a venture named ERROR was initiated by Serpent. According to the post, this project carried out a rug pull and led to the ban of a former professional gamer from X. Interestingly, the individual who deployed ERROR transferred 23 Ether in October to two swift exchanges, both transactions ending up at the same gambling platform deposit address.
ZachXBT noted that Serpent regularly wagers large sums on platforms like Roobet, Stake, BC Game, and Shuffle, often sharing these gaming sessions with friends on Discord. Recent evidence from an on-chain investigator reveals that Serpent gambled more than $300,000 in a single day this month.
Serpent’s History Of Alleged Scams
To further the claims, the post explained that the ex-pro Fortnite player was dismissed from the esports team Overtime in June 2020, following allegations of cheating.
In 2022, I was among the founders of the NFT project DAPE. However, as reported by ZachXBT, the project experienced a rug pull incident. I, as Serpent, positioned myself as a cyber security analyst with a focus on marketing and security, and I claimed to be developing Sentinel, allegedly the first-ever anti-mass DM tool.
After receiving the investigator’s report, the person being accused has removed all posts from their X account, switched their username, and updated their profile picture. Given this, the cryptocurrency sleuth believes there could be connections to other unlinked cases that haven’t been explored yet.
It’s important to mention that the meme coin market and the Solana-based platform implicated in Serpent’s alleged scams are currently facing criticism following a live stream controversy, which has sparked renewed debates about the dominant storyline in this space.
According to a report from Bitcoinist, the platform Pump.fun encountered criticism due to their permissiveness towards the exploitation of their live streaming tool. This misuse was for the promotion of recently developed meme coins, which were advertised inappropriately, employing harmful, violent, and questionable methods.
The event momentarily halted the platform’s ability to stream live content. Additionally, industry leaders such as Changpeng Zhao brought up the topic of memecoins utility, expressing them as “a bit odd” and encouraging the community to concentrate on developing genuine blockchain projects instead.
Nevertheless, these tokens remain the top choice for numerous investors, as fresh internet sensations reach significant landmarks during the memecoin frenzy and the ongoing market surge.
