Destiny 3 Isn’t Happening, Bungie Expected to Be Hit With Significant Layoffs

Reports indicate that Bungie, the company behind Destiny 2, is planning another round of layoffs. According to a recent Bloomberg report highlighted by IGN, these cuts are expected to be substantial. Additionally, there are currently no plans to begin development on Destiny 3, adding to concerns about the studio’s stability following years of challenges under Sony’s ownership.

This news comes just after Bungie announced that Destiny 2 will receive its last major content update on June 9, 2026. Called Monument of Triumph, this update will signal the end of new development for Destiny 2. However, Bungie has assured players that the game will still be playable after that date, similar to how the first Destiny remains available today.

Bungie Is Reportedly Moving Away From Destiny 2, But Destiny 3 Is Not Its Next Step

Bungie announced that the Monument of Triumph update is both a farewell to active development on Destiny 2 and a fresh start for the studio, allowing them to focus on creating their next games. The update will be available to all players for free and aims to make Destiny 2 more inviting for those returning before development wraps up. After the update, Bungie’s regular weekly blog posts will stop, but they’ll still share news and updates through social media and other platforms.

A recent Bloomberg report indicates that Bungie isn’t necessarily working on Destiny 3, despite rumors. While Bungie is still developing and exploring new ideas within the Destiny universe, none of those projects have been approved for full development yet. This means Destiny 3 isn’t currently planned as their next big game, even as Destiny 2 reaches the end of its active development cycle.

Bungie is now primarily concentrating on Marathon, a new extraction shooter and their biggest release outside of the Destiny series in years. A recent report from Bloomberg, summarized by IGN, indicates that while Bungie initially considered ways to make Destiny 2 easier for new players, they ultimately decided to dedicate more staff and resources to Marathon. Bungie recently detailed plans for Marathon Season 2, starting June 2nd, which will include new player-versus-environment content, a better introduction for beginners, and adjustments to make the game more approachable.

Bungie’s current emphasis on Marathon is happening during a challenging period for both Bungie and Sony. Sony purchased Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022, hoping to expand PlayStation’s live-service games, but the investment hasn’t yet yielded the expected results. Recently, Sony announced a $765 million loss related to Bungie, which appears to be linked to weaker-than-expected performance from both Destiny 2 and Marathon.

Bungie has experienced layoffs before. Earlier in 2024, the company cut around 220 jobs, which was about 17% of its staff. In addition, 155 employees transitioned to positions at Sony Interactive Entertainment. Bungie CEO Pete Parsons explained these changes were due to increasing development costs, economic challenges, and the studio overextending itself.

Bungie’s success now hinges on the revival of Marathon and the ability to develop future Destiny games beyond initial planning stages. While Destiny 2 will still be playable after its final update, with no Destiny 3 currently planned and potential layoffs on the horizon, Bungie is facing a period of considerable uncertainty.
