Dragon Ball: 7 Strongest Characters Who Became Literal Gods, Ranked

Unlike many stories, the gods in Dragon Ball aren’t born with power – they achieve it. Early in the series, being called a ‘god’ simply meant you were a guardian of a planet or galaxy, but these gods weren’t invincible. By the end of Dragon Ball Z, most of the Saiyan race had surpassed even the strongest gods. However, Dragon Ball Super redefined the concept of gods with the introduction of powerful beings like Angels and the Gods of Destruction, and a new type of energy called God Ki.

In the Dragon Ball universe, a special energy called God Ki allows fighters like Goku and Vegeta to reach incredible power levels, essentially becoming gods. While naturally gifted fighters such as Broly, Gohan, and Frieza are already powerful enough without it, Goku and Vegeta rely on God Ki to stay at the top. Achieving godhood is a rare accomplishment reserved for only the strongest warriors.

7. Fused Zamasu Killed Almost Every God in His Multiverse to Become the Only God

Zamasu is the only villain in the official Dragon Ball story who manages to wish for immortality. As part of his plan to eliminate all mortals, Zamasu and Goku Black travel between universes, killing all the Supreme Kais. This also causes their linked Gods of Destruction to disappear. By the time Goku Black attacks Future Trunks’ timeline, Zamasu is the sole remaining god in that future, aside from Zeno. To become even more powerful, Zamasu fuses with Goku Black using the Potara earrings, creating Fused Zamasu.

Fused Zamasu is incredibly difficult to defeat because he can’t die. Combining his power with Goku Black makes him stronger than both Goku and Vegeta. Ultimately, the heroes couldn’t win on their own. Goku had to ask Future Zeno to completely destroy Trunks’ entire universe to finally stop Zamasu. If Zeno hadn’t intervened, the Z-Fighters would have failed, and Zamasu would have become the sole god, existing forever.

6. Toppo Trained His Whole Life to Become a God of Destruction

Toppo is the captain of the Pride Troopers and the second most powerful fighter in Universe 11, after Jiren. He’s been training with Belmod his whole life, preparing to become his universe’s next God of Destruction. In the manga version of the exhibition match, Toppo defeats Super Saiyan Blue Goku with a perfectly timed kick, securing a win for Universe 11. During the Tournament of Power, Toppo unlocks his Destroyer Form while fighting Vegeta, and with this form, he gains mastery over the Hakai technique.

Toppo’s Destroyer Form and Vegeta’s Ultra Ego share many similarities, including a purple aura and a focus on raw, destructive energy. By reaching a new level of Super Saiyan Blue, Vegeta becomes powerful enough to challenge Toppo’s Destroyer Form. Vegeta ultimately defeats Toppo by unleashing a massive ‘Final God Explosion,’ knocking him out of the tournament. However, Toppo surviving the attack implies he was significantly more powerful than Vegeta thought, and could have continued fighting if not for the tournament rules.

5. Moro Turned Into a God-Tier Villain Once He Stole Merus’ Powers

Moro is the primary villain in the new Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol anime, and he’s one of the most powerful enemies the series has ever seen. He has a unique ability: by consuming others, he can steal their powers. In his climactic fight with Goku, Moro absorbs all of Merus’ skills, effectively giving himself a version of Ultra Instinct and the power of God Ki. While this significantly boosts his strength, he’s ultimately defeated by Goku, who has mastered Perfected Ultra Instinct.

Moro wasn’t able to awaken God Ki on his own, which meant his body couldn’t handle the power of Merus. This caused his body to break down and fuse with the planet, transforming him into Planet Moro. As a part of Earth itself, Moro began draining the life force from everyone on the planet. He was finally defeated when Vegeta used Forced Spirit Fission and Uub shared a massive amount of energy, allowing Goku to deliver the final attack.

4. Goku Was the First Mortal to Become a Living God

As a huge Dragon Ball fan, I was absolutely blown away when Goku first achieved Super Saiyan God in Battle of Gods! He wasn’t just getting stronger, he was becoming a god – the first mortal to do so! It was incredible seeing him go through the ritual with Vegeta and the others. And then, throughout Dragon Ball Super, we get to watch him really hone that God Ki. While there are definitely other powerful gods out there, Goku’s understanding and control of God Ki is seriously impressive – he’s clearly mastered it better than almost anyone!

Throughout the Tournament of Power and the arcs that followed, Goku has steadily improved his mastery of Ultra Instinct, eventually reaching a level comparable to that of an angel. He honed his skills with training from Merus, and later achieved True Ultra Instinct by gaining complete emotional control during the fight with Granolah. By the events of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Goku has become so proficient with God Ki that he can now activate Perfected Ultra Instinct at will.

3. Vegeta’s God Forms Are Stronger Than Goku

Vegeta has surpassed Goku in strength, a significant milestone after a long time. While Goku is more skilled at utilizing God Ki, Vegeta achieved his God forms through dedicated training, unlike Goku who initially needed a special ritual. Vegeta spent months rigorously training on Beerus’ planet to master God Ki independently. Furthermore, for much of Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta consistently displayed a more powerful version of Super Saiyan Blue than Goku.

During the Tournament of Power, Vegeta achieved a stronger version of Super Saiyan Blue, called Super Saiyan Blue Evolved, which is comparable in power to Goku’s initial Ultra Instinct form. This new form is significantly more powerful than regular Super Saiyan Blue, and Vegeta actually used it to battle Gohan in his Beast form in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103. Interestingly, Goku needed to use his fully mastered Ultra Instinct to fight Gohan. In addition to Super Saiyan Blue Evolved, Vegeta can also transform into Ultra Ego, a form that unleashes his full, destructive power and is on par with Ultra Instinct.

2. Vegito Was the Only Character Strong Enough to Put Fused Zamasu in His Place

Although Vegito was incredibly powerful at the end of Dragon Ball Z, he wasn’t a god. Surprisingly, Super Saiyan Vegito is actually less powerful than Super Saiyan God Goku. The creators even considered Vegito as a way to defeat Beerus in Battle of Gods, but decided he wouldn’t be strong enough. However, Vegito achieves true god-like power when he reappears during the Goku Black Saga.

I watched as Goku and Vegeta fused using the Potara earrings, becoming Vegito during their fight with Fused Zamasu. Super Saiyan Blue Vegito was incredibly powerful, completely dominating Zamasu. Even though Zamasu couldn’t actually die because he was immortal, Vegito was beating him so badly it almost did the trick! But it turned out Vegito was just too strong – the Potara fusion couldn’t handle that level of power, and they split apart after only a few minutes.

1. Gogeta is the Strongest God-Tier Fusion in Dragon Ball

Gogeta, unlike Vegito, doesn’t have a time limit when fusing. Goku and Vegeta use the Fusion Dance in Dragon Ball Super: Broly to finally defeat the powerful Super Saiyan Broly. Gogeta is the strongest fusion character in the series, and it’s suggested he’s powerful enough to battle even Beerus, though a victory isn’t guaranteed.

During his fight with Broly, Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta achieves an amazing feat for the Dragon Ball series by actually breaking through dimensions. Originally, Akira Toriyama planned for Gogeta to take Broly all the way to the sun for their final showdown. Even while using a huge amount of divine energy, Gogeta maintains his fused form, giving him a significant advantage over Vegito. Ultimately, Gogeta stands out as the most powerful mortal to ever achieve godhood in Dragon Ball.
