Dreams and LittleBIgPlanet Studio Appears To Be Working On a New Open World Game

I’m getting super excited! It looks like Media Molecule, the team behind Dreams, might be working on a brand new open-world game for PlayStation. A resume that just surfaced seems to confirm it, and honestly, it fits with what they hinted at back in April when they started looking for people to work on a completely new project. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Media Molecule, established in 2006, has been part of the PlayStation family since 2010. Over the past twenty years, they’ve become well-known for making imaginative and accessible video games like LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway. Their most recent game was 2020’s Dreams, which built upon the creative tools of LittleBigPlanet, but unfortunately, its online services were discontinued in September 2023. Shortly after, in October, the studio experienced layoffs, with 20 developers losing their jobs. Rumors circulated in early 2024 suggesting the studio might close entirely. However, there haven’t been any further layoffs since then, and it appears Media Molecule is currently working on a new, unannounced project in secret.

Media Molecule Could Be Working on a New Open World Game

MP1st recently shared a report about a resume they found belonging to an artist at Media Molecule. The resume details experience as a Senior Environment Designer working on a new, unannounced PlayStation game. What’s getting fans excited is the mention of “open-world content,” which suggests the game might have a large, explorable world.

Based on recent information, Media Molecule’s upcoming game appears to be a fascinating blend of familiar and new. While the studio is known for linear adventure games, their previous title, Dreams, experimented with a different, more open-ended approach. Mark Healey, a founder of Media Molecule, has indicated they’re aiming for a more traditional game experience this time around. However, reports of open-world elements suggest this new project could also be a bold step forward for the studio, potentially charting new territory while still feeling true to their core strengths.

Beyond leading the creation of open-world content, a developer’s resume hints at details about Media Molecule’s next game. It shows they reviewed levels designed by other team members, which supports earlier statements from 2024 indicating the new project is a more conventional game with levels built by the developers, unlike their previous title, Dreams.
