FromSoftware just announced a big update for the popular game, Elden Ring. Patch 1.16.2 will be released after a brief period of server maintenance starting at 12:00 AM PDT (9:00 AM CET, 4:00 PM JST) and lasting about three hours.
Since its release in 2022, Elden Ring has quickly become known as one of the most important and highly-regarded video games ever made—many consider it the best work from developer FromSoftware. It’s no surprise that the game has received significant updates, a major expansion, and collaborations with other games over the last four years. However, it’s amazing to think Elden Ring hasn’t even reached its five-year anniversary yet, which highlights the sheer amount of content players have enjoyed since it first came out.
Patch 1.16.2 is now available, addressing problems that caused the game to freeze, crash, or display visual glitches in some situations. FromSoftware has thanked players for their patience, and this update seems focused on improving the overall game experience.
This update doesn’t add any new features, but fixing bugs and stability issues is crucial for a game as amazing as Elden Ring, so even a small update is helpful. Plus, with Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition coming out soon, it’s logical that FromSoftware is focused on ensuring the original game runs smoothly.
After Patch 1.16.2 was released, players discussed what the update might mean. Some wondered if FromSoftware was preparing for a larger announcement, with one user asking, “Are you getting the servers ready for something new?” Others felt hopeful that the maintenance, even without listed changes, was a necessary step for future content. One player theorized, “Maybe the maintenance itself doesn’t add anything, but it’s needed to enable future additions – like the maintenance happens, and then, surprise, more content!”
FromSoftware hasn’t said whether this free download means new content is coming, or if it’s simply an update to improve the existing game. It seems likely to be the latter, considering the studio is currently busy with both Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition and a new Nintendo Switch 2 game called The Duskbloods. It’s unlikely they’d release downloadable content for Elden Ring unexpectedly, though we once thought the same about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Currently, Elden Ring’s Patch 1.16.2 mainly focuses on improving the game’s performance and fixing bugs. However, it’s exciting to think about what this could mean for the future of the popular RPG.
