Every Ascian in Final Fantasy 14 and Where They Are Now

Spoilers for Final Fantasy 14 up to Patch 7.5 follow.

For over ten years and through five major updates, Final Fantasy 14 has challenged players with a huge variety of mythical monsters. Players have battled everything from powerful dragons like Midgardsormr and the massive war machine Omega, to the god-like beings Zodiark and Hydaelyn. However, out of all the enemies fans have fought in Final Fantasy 14, the Ascians are arguably the most memorable.

The Ascians were once powerful mages who ruled Etheirys. They aim to bring back their dark god, Zodiark, and use him to resurrect their lost people by sacrificing everyone else. This group had different levels of members, but was guided by 13 leaders called Overlords. Among these Overlords were three particularly powerful figures known as Paragons of the Source. All of the Overlords wore red masks and held positions of authority in the ancient civilization they once led. Over time, many of these dark mages have been defeated, and the Ascian organization no longer exists as a whole. However, some members are still active in Final Fantasy 14. Here’s a look at the 13 Ascian leaders and what happened to them leading into the Evercold storyline.

The First Seat: Loghrif, the Pastor

  • Zodiac Sign: Aries
  • True Name: Gaia
  • Role: Caretaker of terrestrial creatures
  • Status: Active as Gaia (non-Ascian)

Loghrif was known for being very forgetful; she cared for land animals in ancient times and had a romantic relationship with Mitron, another member of their group. In Final Fantasy XIV, she appears as one of the Ascian leaders, though players never meet her directly. After becoming an Ascian, she and Mitron tried to merge the First Reflection with another world. However, the hero Ardbert and his allies defeated them, causing a massive surge of light that almost destroyed that world.

Following her death, Loghrif’s spirit was reborn on the First as a young girl named Gaia – the same name she held as an Ancient. Suffering from memory loss and controlled by Mitron, who wanted to revive his former partner, Gaia almost became the Ascian Loghrif again. However, Ryne and the Warrior of Light intervened, allowing her to remain independent. Gaia, who also appears in Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, now possesses some of the abilities she had as an Ancient Ascian, but is now an ally, effectively ending the threat of Loghrif for good.

The Second Seat: Mitron, the Mariner

  • Zodiac Sign: Taurus
  • True Name: Artemis
  • Role: Caretaker of aquatic creatures
  • Status: Destroyed

Similar to how Loghrif created many land creatures in Final Fantasy 14, Mitron was responsible for creating many of the beasts that live in the sea. Later reborn as an Ascian, he deceived the heroes of the First into killing him. This act transformed him into the first Sin Eater, Eden, and unleashed the Flood of Light – an event that almost destroyed the First Reflection in FF14 – by using Ardbert’s wish to eliminate darkness and greatly increasing its power.

In the Eden raid of Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, players fought Mitron, who was trying to recreate his lost love by merging with the planet Gaia and sharing his memories of Loghrif. While he almost succeeded, the player character and Ryne defeated him, sending his spirit back to the Aetherial Sea for eventual rebirth.

The Third Seat: Emet-Selch, the Redeemer

  • Zodiac Sign: Gemini
  • True Name: Hades
  • Role: Keeper of the Underworld
  • Status: Destroyed

Emet-Selch was a uniquely powerful figure in Final Fantasy XIV. As one of the three Paragons – Ascians who survived the sundering of Hydaelyn – he retained his original, complete form from the time of the Ancients. This made him the leader of the Ascians, with other Ascian leaders respecting his plans and following his orders. Importantly, only Paragons could transform fragmented souls into full Ascians by restoring their memories and abilities.

Long ago, Hades’ ability to perceive a person’s soul made him the perfect choice to lead where Emet-Selch oversaw the afterlife. After a major division, Hades and other powerful beings became the Ascians, intentionally causing disasters – known as Calamities – in an attempt to merge the thirteen reflections of the world of Final Fantasy XIV with the Source, a process called an Ardor. Emet-Selch was behind some of the most devastating events, including manipulating the Allagan Empire during the Third Astral Era and directly founding the Garlean Empire as Solus zos Galvus in the Sixth Astral Era.

Following Solus’s natural death during the events of A Realm Reborn, Emet-Selch briefly withdrew from the conflict. However, the death of his companion Lahabrea pulled him back in. During Shadowbringers, he manipulated the Warrior of Light into defeating the Lightwardens, believing this would awaken an Ancient being. When that didn’t work, he abducted G’raha Tia, a popular character from Final Fantasy XIV, hoping to use his time-traveling abilities to change the past. Ultimately, the Warrior of Light defeated him, sending him back to the Lifestream.

The Fourth Seat: Pashtarot, the Arbiter

  • Zodiac Sign: Cancer
  • True Name: Unknown
  • Role: Conservator of order and public will
  • Status: Unknown, presumed active

Pashtarot is the most enigmatic of the Ascians. He briefly appeared at the end of A Realm Reborn, uttering only the ominous phrase, “Bahamut stirs,” and appearing as a dark silhouette. Even research into the history of the Ancients has revealed little about him. While his current location and status are unknown at the conclusion of the Hydaelyn and Zodiark storyline in Final Fantasy 14, most believe he remains active.

The Fifth Seat: Fandaniel, the Observer

  • Zodiac Sign: Leo
  • True Name: Hermes
  • Role: Overseer of life
  • Status: Destroyed

Fandaniel only recently took his position before the catastrophic Final Days and the shattering of Etheirys. He was originally known as Hermes and once managed Elpis, a place where new life forms were tested. It was during his time at Elpis that he created the Meteia – powerful psychic beings who ultimately caused the Final Days and the downfall of the Ancients.

Once separated from the rest of his essence, a piece of Hermes’ spirit was reborn as Amon, a skilled Allagan mage who served as an advisor to Emperor Xande. After the Allagan Empire fell in Final Fantasy XIV, Amon joined the Ascians and became Fandaniel, hoping to achieve Xande’s long-held ambitions.

Okay, so after the Paragons were gone, things got way worse. Fandaniel didn’t just want to reshape things, he wanted to end everything. During the events of Endwalker, he actually took control of Zodiark, and honestly, it felt like he wanted me, the Warrior of Light, to finish him off. It was a messed up plan to remove Zodiark’s protection from the Final Days. Of course, it didn’t work! We eventually confronted his spirit in the Lifestream, and this Garlean guy, Asahi – who Fandaniel had been controlling for pretty much the whole expansion – actually pulled his soul into nothingness. It was a pretty wild showdown, to say the least.

Okay, so Fandaniel is a pain because you fight him four times throughout the story. That actually ties him with Lahabrea and Elidibus for the most boss battles in all of Final Fantasy 14 – seriously, that’s a lot of Fandaniel!

  • A clone of Amon in the Labyrinth of the Ancients raid
  • Possessing Zodiark in The Dark Inside trial
  • The transformed, unsundered form of Hermes in Ktisis Hyperboreia
  • Amon the Undying in The Aitiascope

The Sixth Seat: Altima, the Composer

  • Zodiac Sign: Virgo
  • True Name: Unknown
  • Role: Advocate of art
  • Status: Unknown, possibly destroyed

Altima is an Ascian whose background remains largely unknown, distinct from the magical spells or weapon of the same name found in Final Fantasy. The only detail revealed about their role in the Convocation is that they support the arts. While Altima only appeared briefly in a scene from A Realm Reborn, their red Overseer mask was later seen on Gaius van Baelsar after he became the Shadowhunter. It’s unknown if Gaius was capable of truly killing an Ascian leader, so Altima may have simply been in hiding while recovering.

The Seventh Seat: Halmarut, the Sower

  • Zodiac Sign: Libra
  • True Name: Unknown
  • Role: Cultivator of fungal and plant life
  • Status: Active

For a long time, Halmarut was only known for designing some of Final Fantasy 14‘s most recognizable plant-based monsters, like Morbols, Ochu, and Cactuar. But recently, she made a brief appearance in Patch 7.4 as a green-scaled Au Ra with a distinct way of speaking and dressing. In Patch 7.5, she became much more important, revealing to the player character the Solstice – a devastating natural event that would occur if Hydaelyn were to die. As an Ascian Overlord, Halmarut and her allies will be central villains throughout the Godless Realms Saga.

The Eighth Seat: Nabriales, the Contender

  • Zodiac Sign: Scorpio
  • True Name: Unknown
  • Role: Champion of martial techniques
  • Status: Destroyed

Nabriales was a skilled fighter and master of combat techniques. As an Ascian, he served as a key antagonist at the conclusion of A Realm Reborn. During this confrontation, he killed Moenbryda and abducted Minfilia, all in an attempt to obtain Tupsimati, Louisoix’s powerful staff. After defeating him in the trial known as The Chrysalis, the Warrior of Light used the White Auracite – created by Moenbryda – to capture and destroy Nabriales’ essence, making him the first Ascian Overlord to fall to them.

The Ninth Seat: Igeyorhm, the Rhetoritician

  • Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius
  • True Name: Unknown
  • Role: Collator of knowledge and debate techniques
  • Status: Destroyed

Long ago, the position of Igeyorhm was held by a master debater and a vast source of knowledge. The Ancient who held this role during the Final Days was actually a relative – a cousin, specifically – of Lahabrea, a prominent member of the Convocation in Final Fantasy XIV.

Igeyorhm is infamous for destroying the Thirteenth Reflection, which is now the Void – the home of the Voidsent in Final Fantasy 14. She tried to restore the shattered world, but instead tricked the Dark Knight Golbez into killing the Watcher on the moon, unleashing a wave of darkness that doomed the Thirteenth Reflection and failed its protective barrier, the Ardor. As punishment, she allied herself with Lahabrea in the Heavensward expansion. This ultimately led to a confrontation with the Warrior of Light, who used the same technique that defeated Nabriales to banish Igeyorhm to the Aetherial Sea.

The Tenth Seat: Deudalaphon, the Innovator

  • Zodiac Sign: Capricorn
  • True Name: Unknown
  • Role: Patron of invention and architecture
  • Status: Unknown, possibly destroyed

Deudalaphon is a little-known Ascian whose role is as an appraiser and inventor of architecture. They never actually appear in Final Fantasy 14, but their mask is seen on Shadowhunter Gaius, suggesting they are the Ascian who holds the Sixth Seat – a mysterious figure whose identity remains uncertain.

The Eleventh Seat: Emmerololth, the Mender

  • Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
  • True Name: Unknown
  • Role: Curator of medicine and therapeutic practices
  • Status: Destroyed, possibly reincarnated and active

During the Eureka storyline in Final Fantasy XIV, it’s discovered that Emmerololth was the Ascian who tried to unleash the Primal from its confinement. Years prior, a team led by Krile’s grandfather, Galuf Baldesion, seemingly defeated her by trapping her essence within the Lifestream. However, Emmerololth unexpectedly appears during a scene with the Ascian overlords at the end of A Realm Reborn, which happens after her supposed destruction. It’s currently unknown whether another piece of her being survived and reformed, or if her appearance was a mistake and she truly was destroyed initially.

The Twelfth Seat: Lahabrea, the Creator

  • Zodiac Sign: Pisces
  • True Name: Hephaistos
  • Role: Master of creation magic
  • Status: Destroyed

Lahabrea was the first major Ascian enemy the Warrior of Light faced, and he was one of the original, powerful Paragons. He secretly orchestrated almost every plot players uncover in A Realm Reborn and Heavensward. Players fought Lahabrea while he was disguised as Thancred after the Praetorium, and later battled him both individually and as a combined form called Ascian Prime, alongside Igeyorhm. Ultimately, King Thordan absorbed Lahabrea’s soul, making him the first of the Paragons to be defeated.

During the Endwalker raid series, players encountered Ancient Lahabrea and discovered his past: he was originally the head warden of the Pandaemonium prison. They also learned his real name was Hephaistos, and that he divided his soul after a deadly argument with his wife, Athena. Players then battled and defeated this separated piece of him in the Abyssos raid. With Lahabrea’s Shade appearing in Hades’s Elegy as well, this character has been a boss in more encounters than anyone else in Final Fantasy 14, tying with Fandaniel and Elidibus.

The Thirteenth Seat: Elidibus, the Emissary

  • Zodiac Sign: Ophiuchus
  • True Name: Themis
  • Role: Adjudicator of the Convocation
  • Status: Destroyed

Elidibus stood out even among the most powerful Ascians, known as the Paragons. While other Ascians wore black, he wore white and worked to maintain peace among them. His title, Emissary of Zodiark, was well-earned; when the dark god Zodiark was summoned, Elidibus became his core, gaining immense power but losing much of himself – making him a deeply tragic figure in Final Fantasy 14. However, this strength, combined with a deliberate weakness in Hydaelyn’s attack, allowed him to save Emet-Selch and Lahabrea from being destroyed.

Loghrif, a prominent figure known as the First Seat, was initially chosen to be the first offering in the summoning of Zodiark, destined to become its core. However, Elidibus, the youngest member of the Convocation, volunteered to take her place after Mitron persuaded Loghrif to reconsider.

The mysterious Ascian first appeared in A Realm Reborn, subtly controlling characters like Urianger, Ardbert, and the Warriors of Darkness, and driving the story of the Warring Triad. After Emet-Selch’s defeat, Elidibus took direct action to defeat the Warrior of Light and restore what he believed was balance. He battled them three times, each time taking over a different body: Zenos yae Galvus in “A Requiem for Heroes,” Ardbert in “Faded Memories,” and finally as a powerful primal version of the Warrior of Light in The Seat of Sacrifice – a particularly challenging trial in Final Fantasy XIV. This final battle scattered his essence back into the Aetherial Sea. With his death, the last Paragon was lost, meaning no new Ascians could be created.

In the Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker raid series, Elidibus returned as Themis. Initially an ally, he assisted in resolving the crisis at the prison. However, events caused him to oppose the player, leading to a boss fight against his altered form in Anabaseios: The Eleventh Circle. This made him one of the main antagonists, alongside Lahabrea and Fandaniel, each appearing in four boss battles throughout the story.

The Fourteenth Seat: Azem, the Traveler

  • Zodiac Sign: the Sun
  • True Name: Unknown
  • Role: Wanderer and counselor of the people
  • Status: Active as the Warrior of Light (non-Ascian)

Although the Ascian Overlords numbered thirteen, the original Convocation of the Ancients actually had fourteen seats. The extra seat belonged to Azem, a kind and independent traveler who helped people throughout the land. Azem was a friend to many members of the Convocation, including Emet-Selch. They had been trained by Venat, the previous Azem who would eventually become the goddess Hydaelyn in Final Fantasy 14, and Venat shaped them into a skilled adventurer and a selfless person.

Azem disagreed with the plan to summon Zodiark and chose to help people directly, leaving the Convocation. This created a vacancy after the world of Etheirys was fractured in Final Fantasy 14. However, fragments of Azem’s soul – including Ardbert from the First and the players who become the Warrior of Light – would eventually carry on Azem’s heroic spirit.
