The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a huge success when it launched in 2017 on both the Wii U and the new Nintendo Switch. It was the last major game for the Wii U, but the Switch version really drove sales. The game quickly became known for its innovative open-world design, particularly its stamina system, which allowed players to climb almost anything, and the useful paraglider.
There are many reasons why The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is such a fantastic game, and it’s easily considered one of the greatest of all time. The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom
Building In Hyrule
Following the success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom continues the adventure in the same world of Hyrule, but with a much larger landscape to explore. Players can now discover floating islands in the sky and a vast network of underground areas, all while using new construction abilities that add even more depth to the gameplay.
Link’s new prosthetic arm lets players create all sorts of things – from cars to flying machines – anywhere in the game world. While Breath of the Wild was already fantastic, Tears of the Kingdom takes things a step further with added depth, which is exciting for many fans. Thankfully, everything players loved about the original – the open world, challenging dungeons, and beautiful art style – is still present in the new game.
Donkey Kong Bananza
The Next Nintendo Innovator
I’ve been playing Donkey Kong Bananza, and it’s a really fun experience, though it’s not quite as massive as Breath of the Wild. The levels are more focused – smaller open areas linked together with these cool underground tunnels. What I really like is how different each area feels, like you go from a tropical beach to a snowy mountain. And even though the levels aren’t huge, you have a ton of control over Donkey Kong, which makes exploring really satisfying!
Players can use Donkey Kong’s powerful punches to smash through mountains and create shortcuts, or simply search for hidden treasures. Different materials offer unique abilities – gold explodes, rainbow items launch you into the air, and almost anything can be used as a surfboard. The game offers a huge variety of ways to get around, constantly reminding you of Donkey Kong’s strength. It’s full of charm, something that some other adventure games, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, don’t quite have as much of. The relationship between Donkey Kong and Pauline is heartwarming, and the story takes some unexpected turns.
Horizon Forbidden West
A Bow To The Future
When Horizon Zero Dawn first came out, it competed with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but it didn’t gain as much attention, especially as a game for the Nintendo Switch. However, its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, was more successful and established itself well within the open-world gaming landscape. The main characters, Aloy from Horizon and Link from Zelda, share similarities, particularly in their skill with bows and arrows.
In Horizon Forbidden West, Aloy uses a variety of bows, ammunition, and tools, all created from components salvaged from the robotic creatures that inhabit the post-apocalyptic American West. Combat with these machines is exciting, the crafting system is rewarding, and the world is consistently engaging, whether you’re scaling a skyscraper or gliding down from its peak. Like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the game features a beautiful depiction of a world after a disaster, where life persists and humanity endures, even with a reduced population. Players who didn’t enjoy the first game should definitely give this sequel a try – it improves upon the original in every way, and Aloy is a more developed and compelling character.
Ghost Of Yotei
Following The Birds
Ghost of Yotei is an open-world samurai game with a beautiful natural setting, much like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, complete with changing weather and day-night cycles. You play as Atsu, a wandering warrior seeking revenge, and she’s a formidable fighter – even more skilled than Link! The combat is also more dynamic, offering a variety of weapons like bows, chains, guns, and spears, and you can even take weapons from your enemies.
While Ghost of Yotei is a violent revenge story, it also offers beautiful and engaging moments. Exploring the mountains and waterfalls is visually stunning and provides a good challenge. One of the game’s best features is following animal guides to discover side quests – you can help wolves, relax in hot springs, or even paint cranes. This is something more open-world games, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, should consider adding.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach
Playing With Physics
In Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, players will explore a desolate open world, featuring the dry landscapes of Mexico and Australia after a catastrophic event. Fans of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will likely enjoy how you get around, the game’s straightforward premise, and the ability to build structures. Essentially, it’s a game about delivering packages – you’ll be transporting various items between secure underground shelters.
As a fan, I’m really excited about the ways you can get around in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. You’ll have awesome gear to help you navigate tough terrain – think great boots and bracers for rocky areas. You can use ladders for mountains and rivers, but they’re also letting you build really complex systems, even things like a slingshot that uses anti-gravity to launch you around! The story is classic Kojima – totally crazy and unique – but honestly, what really shines is how fun it is to just play and explore. And the multiplayer is amazing; you can subtly impact other players’ worlds and work together to rebuild everything, bit by bit, building highways together. It’s a level of cooperation you don’t even see in a game like Breath of the Wild, which is saying something!
Elden Ring
A Darker Challenger
Okay, so Breath of the Wild is absolutely gorgeous, but let me tell you, it can be brutally difficult! Especially when you first start exploring, you can get one-shot by enemies in certain areas. It actually reminded me a lot of those ‘Souls-like’ games, and if you’ve played Elden Ring, you’ll definitely get a similar vibe. What I really loved is how much freedom you have to create your own Link. You don’t really pick a set class, but you can build him into whatever you want – a powerful warrior, a sneaky ranger, or a magic-wielding mage – because the gear and leveling system are super flexible. It’s awesome!
Like other challenging ‘Souls’ games, Elden Ring can be frustrating when you repeatedly lose to bosses or lose your progress upon death. However, that risk of losing, combined with the potential rewards, is surprisingly addictive. The game’s massive world is packed with secrets, from strange characters to valuable items, always rewarding exploration. It’s also easier to play with friends thanks to three-player co-op, and the open world allows for tons of different approaches to gameplay. Plus, a standout feature compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the ability to double jump with your horse, Torrent – something you can’t do in Hyrule!
