Former Tekken Boss Announces New Studio with SNK

Katsuhiro Harada, who used to lead development of Bandai Namco’s popular Tekken fighting game series, has announced he’s joined SNK and started a new game studio called VS Studio. Harada explained that the name VS Studio has several layers of meaning and that the studio will collaborate with other developers to tackle a variety of new projects.

Katsuhiro Harada began working with Bandai Namco in 1994, initially as a voice actor for the first two Tekken games. He later directed Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament in 1997. Beyond Tekken, Harada contributed to many Bandai Namco projects as a producer, supervisor, and director. Even though he’s no longer the lead on the Tekken series, the character Kunimitsu will return as a playable fighter in Tekken 8 at the end of May.

Harada Reveals He Is the CEO of VS Studio SNK

After leaving Bandai Namco after more than 31 years, veteran game producer Katsuhiro Harada announced he’s starting a new chapter in game development. In a recent video, Harada revealed he is now CEO of VS Studio SNK, a new studio based in Tokyo, Japan. He explained that the studio’s name, VS Studio, has multiple meanings – gamers might think of ‘Versus’ or ‘Visual Studio,’ but it also represents the studio’s focus on video game development (‘Video game Soft VS Development Division’) and a commitment to challenging established norms – embodying the ‘spirit of Versus.’ Harada also mentioned other possible interpretations, like ‘Visionary Standard’ and ‘Vanguard Spirit,’ highlighting the studio’s ambitious goals.

Katsuhiro Harada explained that he formed the new VS Studio after considering how he wanted to spend his career as a game developer. He wanted to concentrate on creating games with a team of people he trusted. He also noted that SNK has already committed to long-term support for the studio, allowing them to confidently tackle any obstacles. With SNK being a well-known name in fighting games—currently with titles like Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves—Harada’s partnership with them is a significant event for the industry. VS Studio is now hiring new team members who are eager to face the demands of modern game development. “We want to be a studio that consistently embraces challenges, and we’re looking for skilled people who share that goal,” Harada said.

SNK is now owned by the Electronic Gaming Development Company (EGDC), which is part of the MISK Foundation in Saudi Arabia. This happened shortly after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) took over the EVO fighting game tournaments. The PIF also invests in major game companies like Capcom and Nintendo, and is currently trying to buy Electronic Arts (EA) for $55 billion.
