Behaviour Interactive announced today that Jason Voorhees, the famous killer from the Friday the 13th movies, is coming to Dead by Daylight as a new playable villain. Players will be able to play as Jason starting June 16th.
Launched nearly 10 years ago, Dead by Daylight quickly became known for featuring characters from popular horror movies. It started in October 2016 with the addition of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode from Halloween, though those characters are no longer available to buy due to licensing issues. Since then, the game has added a huge number of iconic figures, including those from Nightmare on Elm Street, Alien, Child’s Play, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Stranger Things, Alan Wake, Castlevania, and many other franchises.

A (Very) Brief History of Jason Voorhees’ Video Game Appearances
Jason Voorhees is a perfect addition to Dead by Daylight, but he’s no stranger to video games. He first appeared in Friday the 13th: The Computer Game in 1986, a challenging adventure horror title for the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. Players had to find weapons and survive against Jason, who was hunting their fellow characters.
Three years after his debut, Jason Voorhees showed up in a video game adaptation of Friday the 13th for the NES, where players tried to track him down in a classic side-scrolling action game. While officially licensed Friday the 13th games were rare for a long time, the horror villain made a surprise appearance as a playable character in Mortal Kombat X‘s first downloadable content pack in 2015.
Jason Voorhees recently starred in his own video game, simply called Friday the 13th: The Game. Released in 2017, this officially licensed game was developed by IllFonic, the studio behind Predator: Hunting Grounds, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game. Like Dead by Daylight, Friday the 13th offered an uneven multiplayer experience where one player controlled Jason, and up to seven others played as counselors trying to survive at Camp Crystal Lake. While initially receiving mixed reviews, the game was removed from digital stores in 2023 and its online servers were shut down in 2024.
