The anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is incredibly popular, and this summer, the main character will be featured in a Japanese art exhibit celebrating the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt. Even though the second season of the anime finished airing in March, fans are still deeply engaged with the series. The original manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe continues to be a hit worldwide, and the franchise is constantly expanding with things like escape rooms and video game appearances. This latest collaboration is arguably the most surprising one yet.
Published in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2020, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End quickly became popular. Its success is due to its relaxing pace, cozy fantasy world, and lovable characters, all of which were brought to life in the anime adaptation that premiered in 2023. The manga has sold over 35 million copies and has won awards from Kodansha and Shogakukan. Currently, Frieren is highly rated, holding the number one spot on MyAnimeList with a score of 9.26.
Frieren Is Reimagined as Vermeer’s Girl With a Pearl Earring in New Art Exhibition
From August 21st to September 27th, the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan, will host an exhibition called “Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Masterpieces of the 17th Century.” To mark the occasion, a special illustration featuring the character Frieren reimagined as Vermeer’s famous painting was released online. Kanehito Yamada, the creator of the Frieren manga, expressed his excitement, saying he was honored to have his work associated with such a classic. The manga’s artist also shared their enthusiasm, calling it a wonderful experience to study Vermeer’s paintings and create the illustration. Frieren merchandise related to the exhibition will be available, though specific details are still to come.
Anime Expo 2026 will feature a panel for Frieren, confirmed last week. On July 4th, fans will get a chance to hear from key members of the production team – Director Tomoya Kitagawa, Supporting Director Keiichiro Saito, and Producer Yuichiro Fukushi – who will share details about the upcoming third season. Season 3, set to premiere in October 2027, will adapt the popular Golden Land Arc from the manga. Following the short ten-episode run of Season 2, viewers are eager for a longer season when the series returns.
The Frieren manga hasn’t had a consistent release schedule, but fans continue to support Yamada’s work. There were several breaks in 2023 and 2024, and in October 2025, it was announced the manga would be taking another, indefinite hiatus. Both Yamada and Abe are currently prioritizing their health and working out a sustainable plan for continuing the Frieren story. There’s no news yet on when it might return.
