The last few years have seen a resurgence of creative slasher films, bringing a welcome energy to the horror subgenre, especially within the holiday slasher category. While the Terrifier films have dominated recent conversations, 2025’s Heart Eyes quickly became a critical favorite. Directed by Josh Rubin (known for Werewolf Within), the film offered a darkly comedic take on Valentine’s Day. Following a successful run in theaters, earning $33.1 million globally, a sequel, Heart Eyes 2, was greenlit. Now, horror fans have a confirmed release date for the next installment.
Deadline recently announced that Heart Eyes 2 will hit theaters on February 11, 2028, just three days before Valentine’s Day. While details about the story are still under wraps, director Rubin is returning to helm the sequel and will co-write the script with Darcy Fowler. The story itself comes from Christopher Landon (known for Happy Death Day) and Michael Kennedy (Freaky), with Landon also producing. Although not officially confirmed, Mason Gooding (Scream) and Olivia Holt (Totally Killer) are expected to reprise their roles as Jay Simmons and Ally McCabe. This time, Paramount will handle domestic distribution, a change from the first film which was distributed by Sony. Paramount previously managed international distribution for the original Heart Eyes movie.
What’s Heart Eyes About?
The novel Heart Eyes centers around the Heart Eyes Killer (HEK), a serial killer who targets couples each Valentine’s Day. This year, he’s set his sights on Jay Simmons and Ally McCabe in Seattle. However, Jay and Ally aren’t actually a couple—they’re just co-workers. Ally dislikes Jay, believing he’s after her job. During a work outing intended to make her ex jealous, Ally kissed Jay, and the Heart Eyes Killer witnessed it, marking the beginning of a deadly and mistaken pursuit.
Jay and Ally find love after experiencing a shared, difficult past. The movie even ends with Ally proposing to Jay! The actors, Gooding and Holt, had incredible chemistry, and the film successfully blended thrilling horror with sweet romance. It will be interesting to see how their relationship develops in the next installment, and who will become the new target of the killer.
