Mega Gengar is a powerful Pokémon that players will frequently encounter in competitive Pokémon Champions battles. Understanding how to defeat it is crucial for winning and improving your rank. Both Gengar and Mega Gengar are incredibly fast and adaptable, so trainers employ diverse tactics when using them in both single and team battles.
Want to consistently beat Gengar in Pokémon Champions? This guide covers its weaknesses, how to handle its tricky Perish Song and sweeping attacks, and the best team compositions to use against it. We’ll start with a look at Gengar and Mega Gengar’s strengths, abilities, and typical moves.
Mega Gengar Abilities, Weaknesses, & Moves in Pokemon Champions
If you want to beat Mega Gengar in Pokemon Champions, it’s important to know it only has four weaknesses: Ground, Psychic, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks. However, Mega Gengar is very strong against Fighting and Fairy-type Pokemon. This is because its Ghost typing makes it resistant to Fighting moves, and Fairy types are weak to Poison, which Mega Gengar can exploit.
Mega Gengar’s Sludge Bomb is a significant threat to Fairy-type Pokémon, and it’s commonly used in most teams, including those built around stalling tactics like Perish teams.
Gengar and Mega Gengar are powerful attackers but have very low defense – they can deal a lot of damage but are easily defeated. Players often use them to quickly eliminate opponents, sometimes with items like Focus Sash or Gengarite to help them survive a hit. Because they’re so fragile, the best way to counter Gengar or Mega Gengar is to attack them immediately and try to knock them out before they can attack or use strategies like Perish Trap.
The Perish Trap strategy revolves around a Pokemon that uses Perish Song and another that prevents the opponent from switching Pokemon – a common choice for the latter is Mega Gengar with its Shadow Tag ability. These two Pokemon often work with a ‘staller’ – a Pokemon using moves like Substitute, Detect, or Protect – to guarantee a double knockout. The goal is to delay the inevitable so the opponent’s Pokemon faints first, preventing them from switching to a safer Pokemon before Perish Song takes effect.
Even when battling Gengar or Mega Gengar one-on-one, players still need to watch out for a strategy using Perish Song. Many common builds for these Pokémon actually include Perish Song, along with Sludge Bomb, Protect, and Disable.
How To Counter Gengar/Mega Gengar Perish Trap in Pokemon Champions
Battles often start with the opponent sending out a fast attacker to damage your Pokémon and then switch out safely using moves like U-Turn or Volt Switch. This creates an opening for them to bring in Gengar, which they’ll use to stall for time and disrupt your strategy. They might use moves like Perish Song to force switches, and then Protect and Disable to limit what you can do.
Okay, so dealing with Gengar can be tough, especially if they’re setting up Perish Trap. What I’ve found really helps is having a Pokémon with Sucker Punch – Hisuian Samurott works pretty well for this. It’s a super-fast move that can interrupt Gengar’s plan by making it flinch. But watch out! Once Gengar Mega Evolves, it gets this ability called Shadow Tag, which basically stops you from switching out your Pokémon, so you can’t just swap to avoid the Perish Song. You really need to be prepared for that!
Moves such as U-Turn, Volt Switch, and Flip Turn can avoid the effects of Shadow Tag, which is useful for getting out of a tough spot created by Mega Gengar’s Perish Trap strategy. Scizor can learn U-Turn, Manectric knows Volt Switch, and Palafin can use Flip Turn.
Using Taunt is a good way to stop Gengar from using Perish Song, a move that limits opponents to only attack moves. If you do this, Gengar will probably use Sludge Bomb repeatedly. However, because Gengar is very fast, you can set up Trick Room at the beginning of the battle. This gives slower Pokémon, like Corviknight, a chance to attack first and throws off your opponent’s strategy of using Perish Song.
The Corviknight and Meowstic pairing works well against Mega Gengar’s Perish Trap strategy. Meowstic’s ability, Prankster, lets it quickly set up Trick Room, and then Corviknight can use Taunt to stop Gengar from using Perish Song.
Mega Gengar thrives on speed, either to set up its Perish Trap or to overwhelm opponents with powerful attacks like Will-o-Whisp, Sludge Bomb, Protect, and Shadow Ball. While a few Pokémon are faster, Dragapult is a strong example of a counter that can quickly deal significant damage and defeat Gengar before it can use Perish Song. The key is to attack quickly and powerfully.
Garchomp holding a Choice Scarf is another strong option. If it has an Adamant nature and is built to maximize its Attack and Speed, it can easily defeat Gengar and Mega Gengar.
Landing a one-hit knockout (OHKO) can really crush an opponent who’s trying to win by using the Perish Trap strategy. However, be careful, as these players usually have a strong Flying-type Pokémon ready to switch in and counter your Garchomp, which will be stuck using Earthquake every turn. Dragonite is a likely threat, and it could easily defeat Garchomp in the following rounds.

Gengar and Mega Gengar often use Sludge Bomb as their main attack, but they also have Will-o-Whisp to deal with Steel-type Pokemon that resist it. When facing Mega Gengar, players should also watch out for Shadow Ball. Only Pokemon with the Bulletproof ability, like Kommo-o and Chesnaught, are completely safe from this attack.
Tyranitar and Mega Tyranitar are also good choices against Gengar and Mega Gengar. As a Rock and Dark-type, it resists both Poison and Ghost attacks. A well-timed Earthquake can easily defeat Gengar, especially if Tyranitar is built with Dragon Dance and Crunch.
