How to Plant Seeds & Use Crop Plots in Outbound

In Outbound, you’ll explore various locations in your camper van. The core gameplay involves improving your vehicle and overcoming challenges like fixing bridges and machines. You’ll also need to manage basic survival needs, primarily your hunger. Doing things like interacting with the environment and collecting resources will make you hungry, and if you don’t eat, you won’t be able to do much, even run! Luckily, Outbound lets you grow crops, which is the most reliable way to keep yourself fed.

How to Use Crop Plots in Outbound

You need to find the ‘Gardening Blueprint’ before you can start building crop plots. Once you have it, you can craft a basic plot. As you explore further areas, you’ll discover improved versions like the Efficient Crop Plot, which lets your crops grow faster.

A basic crop plot can be built with:

  • 2 Everwood & 2 Everwood Planks

You’ll also need to craft a Watering Can. You can make it using four Scrap Metal, which is commonly found on the ground around signal towers in areas one, two, and four.

After crafting a Crop Plot and Watering Can, you’ll be able to start planting. Simply look at the small orange label on the front of the crop plot โ€“ it has two little wooden pieces beside it. This will bring up the option to interact with the plot and plant your seeds.

Then, click the empty space to open a menu showing all the crops you’re carrying. Choose the crop you want to plant โ€“ like carrots or roadberries โ€“ and then click ‘Plant’ to place it in the ground.

Once you’ve created a plot for growing crops, you might be asking how to get more plants. Luckily, you don’t need seeds! Just replant any fruit or crops you’ve already harvested, and they’ll grow again.

Once you choose a crop, a green message will appear showing you how long it will take to grow. If your plant needs water, a small red watering can icon will show up on the front of the crop plot.

You’ll need water to keep your crops growing, so always collect it whenever you can from wells, bottles, and anywhere else you find it. To water your plants, simply check the soil in your garden and use your watering can to give them a drink.

Growing your own crops is a simple way to have food readily available while traveling or to get ingredients for more complex recipes. I discovered that planting a single coastberry in a designated crop plot, watering it, and waiting just one day resulted in a harvest of 10 coastberries.

I didn’t have any trouble with the hunger system in Outbound. I mostly just ate berries and found food as I went, and that was enough to keep me going. I didn’t bother with complex cooking.
