It takes a little getting used to the new gameplay in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, even for long-time players. The way moves have cooldowns feels more like an online role-playing game than a typical Pokemon game, but it also allows for some interesting new tactics. I think switching from turn-based battles to a more active combat system is a welcome change for the series, which had become a bit predictable, though some players might be annoyed by how certain moves have been altered to fit the new style.
I’m a dedicated competitive *Pokémon* player, and I always appreciate having the move Protect on my team. Being able to avoid damage at the right moment can really change a battle, even when you’re just playing for fun. However, the battle system in *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* made Protect frustrating at first. Once I figured out how to use it effectively though, I realized it’s one of the strongest moves in the game.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Changes to Protect Take Some Getting Used To
Getting the TM for Protect in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* is pretty simple – you just need to reach rank 4 in Mabel’s Research. I unlocked it early in my game and quickly taught it to all my Pokemon. I thought I’d use it right away in my first Z-A Royale promotion match, but when Protect failed to block a super effective attack from Zach’s Pikachu on my Totodile, I got frustrated. It seemed like the game was encouraging me to focus on attacking instead of defending.
How Protect Has Changed in Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s
- Type: Normal
- Category: Status
- Cooldown: 15
- Effect: The user takes on a protective stance that prevents incoming attacks from landing.
In past *Pokemon* games, the move Protect let a Pokemon avoid all damage for one turn, but it had a chance of failing if used repeatedly. The new game, *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, removes that failing chance, but now Protect has a 15-second cooldown to stop players from using it too often.
Protect no longer completely blocks all damage. Instead, it now briefly makes your Pokémon invulnerable, preventing damage from attacks if timed correctly. I struggled to learn when to use Protect – I had to watch my opponent’s Pokémon and activate it just as their attack was coming to avoid damage. It took practice to master this timing, but it was worth it! Protect has become essential for success in the later stages of *Pokémon Legends: Z-A*.
Detect is a move that defends against attacks, but it’s not as widely available as Protect. It also offers less protection and has a longer wait before it can be used again.
With the Right Strategy, Protect Becomes a Must-Use Move in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
I used to struggle with timing Protect correctly, especially with its cooldown. But I learned that watching your opponent’s Pokemon is crucial. They briefly show what move they’re about to use, and that’s your cue! If you activate Protect during that short window before the move happens, it blocks the attack completely. After practicing, I got good at finding that timing and have used Protect to save my Pokemon in tricky spots throughout the main game and in ranked battles in *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*.
