Invincible’s Omni Man Was Never Supposed To Be Played By J.K Simmons

It’s surprising to think Omni-Man, the famous superhero from Invincible, almost had a different voice actor. Thankfully, JK Simmons didn’t agree with the initial plan. He was originally offered a completely different role – one that was the opposite of Nolan Grayson – but he made the smart choice to play Omni-Man instead.

Invincible tells the story of Mark Grayson, a teenager who gets superpowers from his superhero father, Omni-Man. Initially, it seems like a normal story about growing up, but Mark quickly discovers that being a hero is far more difficult and violent than he expected. While learning to use his powers, battling villains, and navigating life as a student and friend, Mark uncovers disturbing secrets about his father and the sacrifices required to save the planet.

Simmons Was Slated To Play Cecil

On a recent episode of The Escape Pod Podcast, series creator Robert Kirkman shared that J.K. Simmons was originally offered the role of Cecil, the mysterious and manipulative agent. Surprisingly, Simmons immediately asked if he could play Omni-Man instead. Kirkman was impressed by this bold request and agreed. That decision proved perfect, as Simmons’ incredible performance is a huge reason why Omni-Man is such a popular and compelling character.

J.K. Simmons recently told GQ that he initially struggled to picture himself playing the scheming Cecil, but he found Omni-Man a much better fit. Surprisingly, he wasn’t aware of the major plot twist revealing Nolan Grayson’s true nature—the one that transformed the admired hero into a complex character.

We first thought about giving him a different part – maybe Cecil. But when we sent him the script, he actually preferred playing Omni-Man, which we were happy to agree to.

Cecil Ended Up With A Perfect Voice Actor

J.K. Simmons’s powerful voice perfectly suited the character of Omni-Man, contrasting sharply with the role of Cecil. Walton Goggins has since taken on the part and is proving to be a fantastic fit. It was fortunate that Simmons accepted the role of Omni-Man, as he was initially hesitant to join Invincible. Despite a strong cast, Simmons’s performance has consistently stood out.
