It’s Official: The Switch 2 is Getting More Expensive

Nintendo has finally confirmed the new Switch 2 will cost more than previous models worldwide. Like other tech companies, Nintendo is facing higher costs for the parts needed to make its consoles. While some companies have been able to avoid price increases, the Switch 2 will unfortunately be more expensive when it releases later this year.

While not unexpected, the price increase is still a letdown. Experts have been predicting a price hike for some time due to the ongoing shortage of RAM. More recently, investors also urged Nintendo to raise prices for the Switch 2, citing the unstable market. Nintendo had managed to avoid raising prices for months despite economic challenges, but that has now changed.

Nintendo is Raising Switch 2 Prices in Multiple Countries

Nintendo announced on May 8th that the price of the Switch 2 will increase in several countries due to changing market conditions. In the U.S., the price will rise by $50, bringing the total to $499.99. Similar increases will happen in Canada ($50), Europe (€30), and Japan (¥10,000). Although these price increases aren’t as large proportionally as last year’s, it’s disappointing news for those planning to buy a Switch 2. Fortunately, there’s still time to purchase the console at the current price, as the new prices won’t take effect until May 25, 2026, in Japan and September 1, 2026, in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

Nintendo Switch 2 Price Changes

Original Price Revised Price % Change
Japan ¥49,980 ¥59,980 20%
U.S. $449.99 $499.99 11%
Canada $629.99 $679.99 7.9%
Europe €469.99 €499.99 6.38%

Japan has seen a much larger price increase on the Switch 2 compared to other regions, but this isn’t entirely surprising. The Switch 2 was initially less expensive in Japan, so it makes sense that prices would rise more significantly as production costs go up. In fact, Japan is the only country where Nintendo is raising prices on all Switch models – the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED – starting May 25th. Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions will also cost more there starting in July.

Nintendo hasn’t said exactly why it’s making changes, but it’s likely due to a shortage of parts. The cost and availability of RAM, a key component, have been causing problems for many hardware companies. Nintendo originally thought it had enough supplies to manage, but the situation hasn’t improved. In fact, one expert, Micron, believes the RAM shortage could last until 2026 or beyond. Considering Nintendo recently raised prices while evaluating the global economy, it appears they expect these issues to continue for a while.

All the major console makers have increased prices on their systems in the last year. The Xbox Series X and S have seen two price increases in 2025, while PlayStation 5 prices have gone up as much as $200 since its initial release in 2026. Valve is still deciding on the price and release date for the Steam Machine due to current economic challenges. This is a frustrating trend with no immediate resolution, so if you’re planning to buy a new console, it might be a good idea to do so sooner rather than later.
