Latest Sony Financials Do Not Look Good for Destiny, Marathon Dev Bungie

Just a few years after Sony invested $3.6 billion in the creators of Destiny 2 and Marathon – Bungie – the investment appears to be a significant loss. While Bungie has continued to support Destiny 2 with updates and Star Wars content, and recently released Marathon, these efforts haven’t resulted in a profitable return for Sony.

When Sony bought Bungie in 2022, it seemed like a good move. Bungie’s Destiny 2 was very popular, and they were also working on a new game called Marathon. Sony wanted strong, ongoing online games for PlayStation, and Bungie seemed like a solid investment. However, just a few years later, it’s unclear what the future holds for Bungie and its projects.

The Latest Sony Financials are a Bad Look for Bungie

Sony recently reported significant losses related to its acquisition of Bungie. They’ve written down the value of Bungie by $565 million, adding to a $204 million loss from the previous year, for a combined total of $769 million. This information comes from Daniel Ahmad at Niko Partners, a firm that analyzes the video game market. Despite Bungie’s long-term plans for its Marathon project, these losses are concerning and could impact how future content for the game is released.

Ahmad shared his thoughts after reporter Takashi Mochizuki highlighted generally positive financial results for Sony. Ahmad pointed out that Bungie is a significant weak point for Sony’s gaming division, having lost almost $800 million in value in less than three years. The issue is compounded by the fact that Bungie’s biggest asset, the game Destiny 2, has seen a massive drop in players – losing 90% of its player base in the year after the Edge of Fate expansion was released.

While people are still playing Marathon, it hasn’t reached the same level of popularity as Destiny once did. Combined with Destiny 2‘s struggle to keep players engaged, Bungie is facing a difficult situation, regardless of how you look at it. Essentially, Bungie is negatively impacting Sony’s overall financial success, and there’s little that can be done to fix it quickly.

Bungie has been quick to respond to player feedback on Marathon, consistently releasing updates that are improving an already strong gameplay experience. While Marathon probably won’t be the game to fully revive Bungie’s fortunes, and with Destiny 3 reportedly in the early stages of development, it’s uncertain if Bungie can regain momentum before Sony intervenes.
