It’s Officially the End of an Era for PlayStation Plus

Sony has announced that PlayStation Plus subscription prices will be going up across all levels. This ends a period where PlayStation Plus had remained more affordable than Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, especially after Microsoft raised its prices last year. While PlayStation Plus is still the cheaper option, many subscribers will likely be disappointed by the change.

When Sony announced the price changes for PlayStation Plus, they initially only revealed the new cost for the Essential tier. It’s now $10.99 a month for new subscribers, up from $9.99 – a small increase, but noticeable given rising costs everywhere. While the original announcement on Twitter didn’t mention it, the Extra and Premium tiers also cost more. However, some details mean the price hike isn’t as significant as the one Game Pass Ultimate users saw last year.

PlayStation Plus is Now More Expensive

Essential Tier

  • 1-month – $10.99
  • 3-months – $27.99

Extra Tier

  • 1-month – $16.99
  • 3-months – $43.99

Premium Tier

  • 1-month – $19.99
  • 3-months – $54.99

PlayStation Plus is getting a price increase for new and lapsed subscribers. The Extra tier will now cost $16.99 per month (previously $14.99), and Premium will be $19.99 per month (up from $17.99). Three-month subscriptions are also going up: Essential will be $27.99 (previously $24.99), Extra will be $43.99 (up from $39.99), and Premium will be $54.99 (previously $49.99). The good news is that annual subscription prices are staying the same, and current PlayStation Plus members won’t be affected by these changes until their subscription lapses.

The recent price increase for PlayStation Plus signals a change for the service. PS Plus used to be an incredible value for gamers, and while it’s still a good deal, the higher price makes it less attractive. This is particularly true when considering the quality of games recently added. While the Extra tier has seen some major titles, like Red Dead Redemption 2 coming in May 2026, many subscribers feel the Essential and Premium tiers haven’t received enough attention.

PlayStation Plus subscribers have repeatedly expressed disappointment with the free monthly games offered with the Essential tier, particularly because they often feature sports titles and a lack of diverse options. The Premium tier, which promises classic games from older PlayStation consoles like the PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3, has received even less attention and fewer new additions.

Consider the recent PlayStation Plus Premium update: the Extra tier gained seven new games, but Premium only received one – the classic PlayStation 1 rail shooter, Time Crisis. Given that many other popular games from that time period are still missing from PS Plus Premium, it’s understandable why subscribers might question the value of the most expensive tier, particularly after the recent price increases.
