Recent leaks suggest Mega Mewtwo in Pokémon GO will be quite challenging to Mega Evolve, requiring a lot more Mega Energy than other Pokémon, and it will have a very high CP. It’s expected to be released during the GO Fest event in 2026.
GO Fest is usually one of the largest events each year for Pokemon GO, and the 2026 event promises to be just as big. Niantic and The Pokemon Company have announced that Mega Mewtwo X and Y will finally be added during GO Fest 2026, and players will be able to encounter them at live events and in special Super Mega Raids. Ahead of the July event, leaks have revealed that many Legendary Pokemon and Mega Raids will be available during the weekend. Now, Pokemon GO fans are discovering that adding Mega Mewtwo to the game will include significant changes compared to how previous Mega Pokemon have been implemented.

A new post on the Pokemon GO subreddit, TheSilphRoad, revealed details about how Mega Mewtwo will work in the game. Players wanting to Mega Evolve their Mewtwo will need to collect 7,500 Mega Mewtwo Energy, regardless of which form they choose. Interestingly, Mewtwo caught during Mega Raids at GO Fest 2026 will automatically have its first level of Mega Evolution unlocked, likely encouraging players to catch new ones. GO Fest 2026 will kick off with live events in Tokyo on May 29, followed by events in Chicago and Copenhagen. A global online event will then run on July 11th and 12th.

Adding Mega Mewtwo to Pokemon GO will bring significant changes, including a high Mega Energy cost. Both Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y will be more powerful than any other Mega Pokemon currently available. Mega Mewtwo X will have an attack stat of 339 and a defense stat of 215, while Mega Mewtwo Y will have an impressive attack stat of 413 and a defense stat of 223. Both forms share the same speed stat of 228. In terms of Combat Power (CP), Mega Mewtwo X can reach a maximum of 6,910, and Mega Mewtwo Y can reach 7,267 – higher than any other Mega Pokemon. Only Eternatus has a higher CP than these two forms.
The introduction of Mega Mewtwo during the 2026 GO Fest will significantly change how Pokemon GO manages Pokemon with two Mega Evolution forms. Currently, only Mega Charizard has two forms, allowing players to choose which one to use when Mega Evolving. However, an update on May 18th separated the energy needed for Mega Charizard X and Y into separate collections, giving players an equal amount of each. The game is also planning to add Mega Raichu X and Y, which were originally featured in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
