The Sendai Colony battle was a huge success, but it turns out the original plan was for it to be much longer – spanning two episodes instead of just one. The director recently explained, through comments from Yuta Okkotsu’s voice actor, why the battle was shortened and why the extra episode didn’t make it to air.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Director Decided Against Adding Another Episode To The Season Finale
I watched Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 as it aired, starting on January 8th, 2026 and finishing on March 26th, 2026, for a total of 12 episodes. The season finale, titled “The Sendai Colony,” was an incredible fight – Yuta Okkotsu went up against Dhruv Lakdawalla, Kurourushi, Takako Uro, and Ryu Ishigori. Honestly, even with some other amazing fights throughout the season, like the Zenin Clan Massacre, this final battle really stood out as the best of the bunch.
The final episode of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 was noticeably longer than most, running for 27 minutes. Typical anime episodes are around 22 minutes long. Despite the extra time, the episode still covered a significant amount of content – a full 8 chapters from the original manga. Because of this, many fans hoped the anime would expand on the battle even further.
I was absolutely floored to hear this! Apparently, the incredible fight we just saw in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime was originally planned to be even longer – stretching across two full episodes! Megumi Ogata, who voices Yuta, shared on a recent podcast that the director, Shouta Goshozono, and the whole team realized that a two-episode format just wouldn’t do the battle justice, given how fast-paced and intense it was. It’s amazing to hear how much thought went into making it perfect!

The director felt dividing this fight into two parts would kill the excitement and energy. Since the show, Jujutsu Kaisen (JJK), is famous for its action-packed battles, many fans agree with this choice. Despite being shorter than expected, the episode was a huge hit with viewers worldwide, as evidenced by its high ratings on sites like IMDb and MyAnimeList. Currently, it’s the top-rated episode of the entire JJK season and is considered one of the best episodes of the year.
I remember hearing from Megumi Ogata, Yuta’s voice actor, that the team really didn’t want to stretch the fight out over two episodes like a typical anime. She explained they were worried it would kill the energy and you’d just have a lot of characters posing instead of actually fighting. They wanted to maintain the fast-paced, non-stop action that Jujutsu Kaisen is known for, and they felt a longer format wouldn’t allow that.
Shortening the finale of Jujutsu Kaisen was a good decision. While adapting eight chapters in 27 minutes sounds like a lot, those chapters were primarily action sequences, which can be trimmed without harming the overall story. The anime maintained a smooth flow and didn’t leave out any important details, and that’s what’s most important. The adaptation of the three-way Domain Expansion was particularly well done, remaining a highlight of the season. Overall, fans enjoyed the anime, and as the director pointed out, lingering too long on static moments would have frustrated viewers expecting a fast-paced experience.
Many viewers are curious if the scenes that didn’t make it into the show will ever be released. Currently, that doesn’t seem likely. While director’s cuts sometimes appear on Blu-ray releases with extra content, it’s unknown whether these cut scenes were actually animated, or if they were removed during the early stages of planning for the third season.
What’s Next For Jujutsu Kaisen After Sendai Colony?
Most fans loved Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, but the upcoming events in Season 4 promise to be even more intense. Season 4 was announced right after Season 3 ended and is expected to be released in 2027, though the specific date hasn’t been revealed yet.
Season 3 of the show was a bit slow-paced, concentrating on smaller conflicts within the Culling Game. However, Season 4 promises much bigger battles and will finally feature major characters like Sukuna. We can also expect the return of fan-favorite characters and the start of the series’ concluding arc.
