Jujutsu Kaisen: Sukuna’s Strongest Innate Techniques, Ranked

Sukuna is a controversial villain in modern anime, but many fans enjoy how truly evil and impactful he is within the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. He’s a unique antagonist because, despite the efforts of the heroic sorcerers to stop him from plunging the world into darkness, he consistently succeeds. Sukuna’s power and experience far surpass his opponents, often making him seem unstoppable, particularly after taking control of a new body.

Sukuna was already incredibly powerful thanks to his natural abilities, easily placing him among the strongest characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. It really makes you wonder, though – what exactly are his most potent innate techniques?

Wait, What’s an Innate Technique?

Jujutsu sorcerers fight using special abilities called “Cursed Techniques.” Most sorcerers develop these techniques naturally, often from a very young age, and they’re unique to each individual – meaning no one else can copy or steal them. That’s why characters like Kenjaku and Sukuna take over other people’s bodies; they need to do this to use specific Cursed Techniques that are actually innate to the person they’re possessing.

Both the Zen’in and Gojō families have incredibly powerful abilities that appear only every few generations – they’re tied to the family line, not just one person. These abilities – the Limitless and Six Eyes of the Gojō clan, and the Ten Shadows Technique of the Zen’ins – are the strongest in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, and each one effectively neutralizes the other.

Historically, only someone with the Ten Shadows Technique could defeat a Jujutsu Sorcerer wielding both the Six Eyes and Limitless. This explains why Megumi is consistently presented as the only character capable of defeating Gojo in a fight. He often assesses opponents by comparing them to Gojo, believing they are weaker and therefore beatable. However, he doesn’t realize his ability to make this comparison stems from possessing a Cursed Technique as powerful as Gojo’s unique combination of abilities.

Innate Techniques, like Yuta Okkotsu’s Copy, Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration, and Nobara Kugisaki’s Straw Doll Technique (which Mahito recognized as incredibly powerful due to its impact on the soul, leading him to kill her), are diverse. Sukuna’s Innate Technique, known as Shrine or Kitchen, has two primary forms: Cleave and Dismantle.

Cleave

I’ve observed a technique called Cleave, similar to Dismantle, that Sukuna uses against strong enemies. It’s interesting because the power of the attack changes depending on how much Cursed Energy both the user and the opponent have. Unlike Dismantle, though, Cleave needs physical contact to work. It’s incredibly destructive – I remember seeing Sukuna use it to defeat Ishigori, who was considered the most powerful sorcerer in the Culling Games based on sheer Cursed Energy output.

Spiderweb

When something inorganic is cleaved, it breaks along lines radiating from the point of impact, similar to how a spiderweb cracks. The way it breaks depends on how strong the material is, as inorganic objects don’t have Cursed Energy to influence the process.

Divine Flame

Divine Flame requires both Dismantle and Cleave to be used first. Sukuna gets around the limited range and speed of Divine Flame by using Binding Vow to essentially lock the technique away from himself when facing multiple enemies – unless the fight is inside his Domain Expansion. His Domain, Malevolent Shrine, ensures Divine Flame always lands: inanimate objects are struck by Dismantle, and living targets with Cursed Energy are hit by Cleave, which then allows him to use Divine Flame.

Sukuna’s Domain Expansion turns the area into a destructive space where everything is violently torn apart, reduced to dust, and then blasted with powerful, oxygen-fueled explosions. These explosions don’t need any extra fuel – they use the particles created by Sukuna’s Dismantle and Cleave as the source. This technique is Sukuna’s most devastating attack, and he used it to defeat the incredibly powerful Mahoraga. The resulting flames create not just an explosion, but also immense pressure and shockwaves that obliterate anything caught inside the Domain. While it’s theoretically Sukuna’s strongest move, certain opponents, like Satoru Gojō, might be able to defend against it.

Dismantle

Dismantle is Sukuna’s main attack, letting him create invisible slashes that can cut through anything – opponents, objects, and Curses alike. He can direct these slashes with or without using his hands. What makes Dismantle so dangerous is its versatility; Sukuna can use it to attack and defend in many different ways. He doesn’t always use broad, sweeping cuts; he can also create a flurry of smaller slashes around an opponent’s body, effectively turning their limbs into something like a chainsaw. This allows him to effortlessly block attacks and even disarm opponents without getting hurt, and it can be combined with regular punches and kicks for even more powerful combos. The power of Dismantle depends on how much Cursed Energy Sukuna puts into it.

World-Cutting Slash

Sukuna, while possessing Megumi’s body, used Mahoraga against Gojō and then dramatically enhanced his Dismantle technique. This new version, called “World-Cutting Slash,” allows him to slice through space itself, bypassing Gojō’s seemingly impenetrable Infinity and ultimately defeating the strongest sorcerer of the current era. What makes this Dismantle so dangerous is that it still hides its attack, but now has the impossible ability to cut through space. The manga describes Dismantle as a technique designed to slice through objects that don’t have cursed energy. Because it was the attack that defeated Gojō, World-Cutting Slash is considered Sukuna’s most powerful and truly original innate technique.

Ten-Shadows Technique (via Megumi Fushiguro)

Sukuna noticed Megumi’s potential as early as their first encounter during the Fearsome Womb arc. They faced a powerful Curse at a juvenile detention facility, where Megumi escaped while Yuji stayed to fight, but they were both outmatched. After Sukuna easily defeated the Curse, he briefly took full control of Yuji’s body. Outside, Sukuna confronted Megumi, questioning why he’d run from the fight after learning about his Ten Shadows Technique. Sukuna’s plan was to possess Megumi and gain access to this powerful technique – a signature ability of one of the three great Jujutsu families. However, Sukuna wasn’t initially aware of the full extent of the Ten Shadows Technique’s capabilities; he simply recognized Megumi’s immense potential.

The Ten-Shadows Technique is best known for summoning Mahoraga, an incredibly powerful Shikigami with the unique ability to adapt to anything. This adaptation makes Mahoraga virtually unbeatable in a fight, and historically, no one has been able to control it – except for Sukuna. Not only does Mahoraga become more resistant to attacks over time, but its own attacks also grow stronger the longer it fights. Sukuna first learned about Mahoraga when Megumi summoned it during the Shibuya Incident, and this encounter further increased Sukuna’s interest in Megumi. Ultimately, Sukuna’s control of Mahoraga, combined with Mahoraga’s adaptive abilities applied to the Dismantle technique, created the attack that ultimately defeated Satoru Gojo.
