Neowiz, the company behind the game Lies of P, is receiving some criticism online. A recent job posting showed they’re starting to use generative AI, and they’re currently hiring an “AI artist” – a combination of terms some find contradictory.
Neowiz is hiring an AI artist to create textures and visual elements – things like character and environment designs – using AI tools such as Midjourney and Stable Diffusion. The artist will also be responsible for developing custom AI models to define the look of a new, unannounced game, which some believe might be a sequel to Lies of P.
Many gamers are upset with Neowiz’s choice to use an AI artist and promote AI-generated art in their games. This isn’t a new issue – players have consistently shown they dislike seeing AI-created content in games. Earlier this year, Pearl Abyss faced criticism when AI-generated artwork was discovered in Crimson Desert. They quickly removed the assets and apologized to players, calling it a mistake.
Neowiz, the studio behind the popular 2023 action-RPG Lies of P (which was heavily inspired by games like Bloodborne and the Souls series), is reportedly developing a sequel. They’ve also confirmed they have several other projects in the works, though details are still under wraps. A previous rumor hinted the sequel might feature an open world, which generated a lot of excitement. However, Neowiz’s recent exploration of using AI in game development – a trend many studios are trying and facing criticism for – could potentially affect how that sequel is received.
