A popular style in shonen manga, especially from the 1970s to 1990s, is called nekketsu. This term translates to “hot-blooded” and describes stories with passionate characters who relentlessly pursue their dreams. While common in sports manga, many action-packed battle stories – like the incredibly popular Dragon Ball – also embody or include elements of this style.
Although the intense, over-the-top style known as nekketsu isn’t as common as it once was, some manga series still capture its spirit. A prime example is Baki the Grappler, a fighting manga that’s recently become more popular thanks to its anime on Netflix. It looks like the series is also planning a new partnership with McDonald’s Japan.
McDonald’s Might Drop Baki Collab Soon
McDonald’s Japan recently posted a playful message on X (formerly Twitter) hinting at ‘the strongest men in the world’ being drawn in by their Chicken Tatsuta. This popular Japanese menu item is a chicken sandwich similar to the McChicken in the US, but it’s fried using the Tatsuta-age method with potato or cornstarch.
The post indicates that McDonald’s might release a special meal inspired by the anime Baki, featuring Chicken Tatsuta. This would likely be similar to their recent Mobile Suit Gundam collaboration, which was popular in Japan. While these anime-themed meals aren’t usually offered outside of Japan, the success of the One Piece x Popeyes collaboration in the US suggests McDonald’s could start exploring similar partnerships with anime series in North America soon.
Why Is McDonald’s Suddenly Partnering with Baki the Grappler?
Although the Baki series might not be widely known outside of Japan, it’s hugely popular there. A new series, Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai, which continues the stories of Baki and Baki Hanma, recently debuted on Netflix. With a Japanese TV broadcast also planned for later this year, this Netflix release is likely a way to build excitement for the show and its upcoming premiere, with a release date expected to be announced soon.

A second season of the anime has been confirmed for Netflix, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet. The series gained popularity internationally after the first Netflix-original Baki anime premiered in 2018. For example, Baki-Dou quickly became popular, ranking second globally on Netflix’s weekly top 10 list for non-English TV shows and appearing in the top 10 in numerous countries.
Originally created by Keisuke Itagaki (the father of Beastars creator Paru Itagaki), Baki has been a long-running series in Weekly Shonen Champion since 1991, now spanning 154 volumes. The story centers on Baki Hanma, a young man dedicated to becoming the world’s strongest fighter, and is known for its intense, no-holds-barred combat. Baki-Dou is the fourth major story arc in the series, which is currently in its sixth arc, Baki Rahen.
Baki the Grappler original manga is published in the US by Kodama.
