The Western Conference playoff final between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder is incredibly close, but Victor Wembanyama is likely to be the deciding factor, perhaps even more than he already has been. There’s truly no player in the NBA quite like him, and that presents a real challenge for OKC, as they don’t have anyone who can effectively match up against him. This uniqueness extends to the world of NBA 2K; even the game’s current and classic rosters lack a player with Wemby’s rare combination of size and skill – a 7’4″ player with an 8-foot wingspan is incredibly uncommon.
The NBA 2K series faces a tough challenge with Victor Wembanyama. They want the game to accurately reflect real basketball, but Wemby can feel overpowered or unrealistic in the game, even more so than in real life. If they prioritize realism, he might be too strong. If they try to balance him by making him weaker, he won’t play like the exciting player he is. How can the game find the right balance now and in future versions? Will Wemby always be an exceptionally difficult opponent in NBA 2K, essentially the game’s ‘final boss’ for years to come?

Break Reality To Avoid An Overpowered Superstar
A New Type Of Broken
Sports games have often launched with characters that seem overpowered, like certain versions of LeBron James in past NBA 2K games. Usually, this imbalance comes from one specific strength, such as speed or power, and is fairly easy to fix with an update or in the next version of the game. Some argue that players like LeBron, Messi, and Wayne Gretzky should be overpowered in games, mirroring their real-life dominance. However, even these legendary players follow the same game rules as everyone else, they’re just better at most things. Developers can strike a balance, making these star players feel authentic without making the game unfair.
Okay, so playing as Wembanyama in 2K is…weird. He’s so unique and tall that the game’s physics engine gets confused. Like, sometimes it thinks he’s blocking a shot even when he hasn’t really moved yet, just because of his crazy reach! I think 2K needs to use the updates they’re doing for the current game to really figure him out. They shouldn’t build the next 2K around just him, but they seriously need to make sure he feels authentic in 2K27. He’s a special player, and the game needs to reflect that without becoming totally unbalanced.
Somehow, Wemby seems to either feel underpowered or broken in the NBA 2K games.
Why NBA 2K’s Usual Balancing Act Doesn’t Work With Wembanyama
A Different Type Of Giant
Look, we’ve seen tall players in the NBA and in 2K before, and 2K usually has a way to keep things balanced when someone’s a physical freak. Basically, 2K uses player builds and badges to level the playing field. If you’re playing as a 7’4″ player like Wemby, the game is designed to make you a little slower on defense, harder to dribble with, and not as good shooting from outside. It’s all about keeping things fair for everyone.
If NBA 2K27 aims for realism, simply recreating Victor Wembanyama won’t be enough. The game needs to capture his unique skills – his smooth dribbling, fast movement on defense, and unexpectedly good step-back shot. This combination of abilities makes him incredibly difficult to defend, which would be realistic, but might not be enjoyable for players.
How Has NBA 2K Handled Wemby So Far?
OK So Far, But Things Will Only Get Harder As Wemby Gets Better (Like He Is Doing Right Now)
When NBA 2K24 dropped, everyone instantly loved playing as Wembanyama – I saw so many people creating builds around him! NBA 2K26 tried to balance him, and they did an alright job. He ended up being a really solid, well-rounded center, but they made sure he wasn’t unbeatable, which was good. Honestly though, he didn’t quite feel as dominant in the game as he is in real life. They kinda toned him down a bit.
As a huge Wemby fan, it’s been amazing to watch him develop! He’s made such a leap from 2025 to now. This past season, 2025-2026, was easily his best yet, and it’s cool to see NBA 2K26 recognize that. They originally rated him a 94, but kept bumping it up until he landed at a 97 – that puts him right up there with the elite! And honestly, I don’t think he’s even reached his full potential. Most players don’t really hit their stride until their late 20s, so I’m excited to see how much better he can get!
Most players prefer creating their own customized setups, as it lets them adjust every detail to exactly how they like it.
Does It Really Matter?
The MyPLAYER Issue
NBA 2K26 let players create MyPLAYER characters up to 7’4″ tall in MyCAREER mode, resulting in a lot of very large virtual players – some even taller than the real-life Victor Wembanyama. Previous versions limited character height to 7’3″ for online competition to keep the game fair. However, with a player like Wemby now in the NBA, that limit didn’t make sense anymore, so the game now allows 7’4″ characters in certain online modes.
If you’re playing the game offline, you can adjust player heights to be as tall as 7’7″, so dealing with Victor Wembanyama shouldn’t be a problem if you need to change your strategy.
No matter what 2K does with Victor Wembanyama in NBA 2K27, players will inevitably create custom characters – either mimicking him or entirely new ones – who are 7’4″ and can shoot like Stephen Curry. That’s simply how the game is played, and 2K shouldn’t limit those options. Even with these custom builds, the official Wembanyama model will still set the standard for how the game feels mechanically. To balance things, 2K needs to develop a physics and stamina system that makes Wembanyama move uniquely, which would also help keep custom characters from being overpowered.
