New Mortal Kombat Game is in The Works Confirms NetherRealm

Ed Boon, a co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, has confirmed that NetherRealm Studios is currently developing a new Mortal Kombat game. Although it’s not certain if this will be their next release – rumors suggest Injustice 3 might come first – it indicates they’ve begun work on the thirteenth main installment in the franchise.

So, I was reading an interview with Ed Boon over at Collider, and he basically confirmed that NetherRealm is definitely working on the next Mortal Kombat game! It sounds like they’re not just stopping at games either – they’ve got a bunch of other projects in the works, like movies or TV shows maybe. He said they’ve got a ton of cool announcements coming soon, which is awesome! I’m super hyped to see what they reveal next.

While fans anticipate the next Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm might release Injustice 3 first. Rumors began circulating last September that a third Injustice game is the studio’s priority. This makes sense, as while Mortal Kombat 1 was initially popular, interest has waned somewhat since its release. This opens up possibilities for a new story and characters, especially since Mortal Kombat 1 has already established a fresh, rebooted universe.

The first reviews for the new Mortal Kombat 2 movie are out, and they’re mostly good! Critics are enjoying the action, the famously violent finishing moves, and all the nods to fans of the game. Some reviewers thought there was too much fan service and that the story felt a little disorganized, but overall, it’s considered a step up from the 2021 film. This version finally includes the iconic tournament and features Johnny Cage in a leading role.

Mortal Kombat 2 will release in cinemas tomorrow, 8 May.
