A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan on January 1, 2024, severely damaging the Noto Peninsula and tragically claiming over 700 lives. The region faced further hardship in September 2024 with heavy rainfall that triggered landslides and flooding. Many local businesses have been forced to shut down, and the area continues to struggle with recovery. To help, the ‘Pokemon With You’ campaign is installing special artwork to encourage fans to visit and support the region’s rebuilding efforts.
Starting in 2018, The Pokemon Company began installing special Pokemon-themed manhole covers across all of Japan, known as Poke Lids. These colorful covers feature unique Pokemon designs and have become popular attractions for fans, who travel to find and photograph them. As part of the ongoing Pokemon Local Acts project, over 400 Poke Lids have been placed so far, helping to boost tourism in smaller towns and areas recovering from disasters. They even function as Pokestops within the popular mobile game, Pokemon GO.
Six New Poke Lids to Be Installed in Ishikawa Prefecture’s Earthquake-Struck Noto Peninsula to Promote Tourism
Following the devastating 2024 earthquake, Ishikawa Prefecture and The Pokemon Foundation are bringing some cheer to the Noto Peninsula with new, Pokemon-themed manhole covers. Starting April 29th, six cities – Suzu, Wajima, Noto, Anamizu, Nanao, and Shika – will feature colorful Poke Lids showcasing popular Pokemon like Sylveon, Roselia, Snorlax, and Gyarados. To add to the fun, several locations will also offer themed attractions: Suzu City is adding a Sylveon monument, Anamizu Station will be decorated with Pokemon, and Nanao City is opening a Pokemon footbath.
Following the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku, Japan – which tragically claimed almost 20,000 lives – The Pokémon Company created the ‘Pokémon With You’ campaign to raise funds and offer support. The campaign quickly organized events to lift the spirits of those affected, including volunteers dressed as Pikachu visiting schools. Pokémon Center stores across Japan also contributed by donating a portion of their earnings to relief and rebuilding projects. When a new Pokémon Center opened in the Tohoku region, people eagerly lined up, with some waiting over five hours to enter.
To mark its 30th anniversary in 2026, Pokémon is planning a year-long celebration with special merchandise and events. This week, Target announced it will release over 100 exclusive Pokémon products in two phases, starting May 2, but they won’t be available for long. Fans can also look forward to “Pokémon Night Out,” a two-night concert series this fall in Los Angeles and London, headlined by Marshmello and Alison Wonderland. For families, “Pokémon Day Out” events will take place this summer in New York City, Dresden, Bordeaux, and Mexico City, with more details coming soon.

It’s been a pretty active year for Pokémon games already. I saw Pokémon Pokopia come out on March 5th for the Nintendo Switch 2, and Pokémon Champions followed quickly on April 8th for both Nintendo Switch and mobile. Pokopia has been getting amazing reviews – it’s currently at a 90 on OpenCritic! But Champions is having a bit of a rough time, with a lot of players complaining about how it tries to get you to spend money, some frustrating bugs, and a steep learning curve if you’re new to the series.
