A charming new single-player game called Candellum has launched on Steam and is already receiving “Positive” reviews. Best of all, it’s free to play! While not many people are playing it yet, developers Out of Seats Studio have created something with a lot of promise.
Building a big collection of games on Steam can get expensive, but it doesn’t have to. Lots of fantastic free-to-play games are available on Steam, letting you jump right in without spending any money. Some free games offer optional purchases later on, like cosmetic items or Battle Passes. However, Candellum is different – it’s a free game with absolutely no way to pay for it, even if you wanted to.
Candellum is a Charming Hack-and-Slash With Positive Steam Reviews

Candellum launched on Steam on May 5, 2026. It’s a top-down action game where fire is central to everything you do. You play as a living candle exploring a silent wax factory. The game features a unique mechanic: your candle can be lit to increase its power and damage, but this quickly burns away its wax. Alternatively, you can keep it unlit to conserve wax, but at the cost of your strength. Both states are dangerous, and you switch between them by throwing your flame. When you throw your flame, it impacts an enemy, weakening them. Bringing the flame back slows your own decay. Every choice you make has a consequence on the battlefield.

The game is visually appealing and has a distinctive art style. The fire-based mechanics work perfectly with the game’s world. It’s unusual to find a single-player game like this offered for free, and the developers have no plans to charge for it in the future, so there’s no pressure to download it right away. However, it’s worth adding to your Steam library – it only takes a single click, and it’s a great game to have!
Players are enjoying Candellum, giving it overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam (95% positive so far). Despite a small number of reviews, there’s a clear consensus: people love the game’s art style, engaging gameplay, and surprising level of refinement considering it hasn’t received much publicity. The main criticism is that it’s currently a little short on content, with some calling it more of a ‘tech demo.’ However, since the game is free to play, it’s definitely worth checking out for anyone looking for a quick and enjoyable experience.

Despite getting good reviews, Candellum hasn’t attracted many players yet. Currently, only 12 people are playing at its peak, which shows how hard it is for even well-made indie games on Steam to become popular. The game isn’t lacking in quality, and hopefully more players will discover it soon.
