As a big fan of NTE: Neverness to Everness, I’ve been trying to figure out this “mental damage” thing. You see it mentioned in the descriptions of some Cartridges, but the game never actually tells you what counts as mental damage. It’s a special damage type that only happens under specific circumstances, and honestly, it’s a little confusing. So, here’s what I’ve learned about how it actually works…
What is Mental Damage in NTE?
There are two sources of Mental damage in NTE:
- Nova Esper Cycle (Psyche + Chaos)
- Fadia (S-Class character)
Nova Esper Cycle
When you create an Esper Cycle by pairing a Psyche character with a Chaos character, you initiate a Nova reaction. This immediately deals a small amount of Mental damage to the target. After a short wait, this initial damage triggers a larger burst of Mental damage to everyone affected.
If Daffodil and Haniel’s Cycle Gauges fill up, and you then perform a full Cycle gauge Entry Attack, they’ll deal Mental damage to enemies.
Right now, Daffodil is the only character in NTE with the Chaos ability, letting her activate Nova in the current version of the game. Lacrimosa is another powerful, S-Class character expected to gain the Chaos ability when version 1.1 launches.
Fadia
In the game NTE, Fadia is a top-tier character who can deal significant Mental damage with her ultimate ability, hitting enemies six times. What’s more, the next five times she attacks after using her ultimate, she deals direct Mental damage instead of her usual Psyche damage.
Okay, so as far as I can tell, Fadia’s unique right now. She’s the only character who can directly deal Mental damage without needing to go through the whole Nova Esper Cycle thing. It’s a pretty big deal because everyone else relies on that cycle to get Mental damage going.
How to Increase Mental Damage in NTE
Mental Damage can be increased from two sources:
- Quiet Manor Cartridge
- Eternal Waltz S-Class Arc
Quiet Manor Cartridge
You can obtain the Quiet Manor Cartridge by repeatedly playing the “Rabbit Hole: Mental Map” anomaly zone. Each attempt costs 40 Character Pixels, and the cartridge provides a specific set bonus when equipped.
- Epic (2): Mental Damage +10%
- Legendary (4): Grants wearer a 12% Mental DMG Bonus per Basic Attack, up to 3 stacks. Each stack lasts 6s.
Eternal Waltz S-Class Arc
Complete the “Deal? Deal!” main quest and defeat The Never-Ending Arachne for the first time to unlock a free Eternal Waltz S-Class Arc. Here are its stats:
- Increases Max HP by 20%. Increases Mental DMG dealt by 10% for 10s after the wearer casts an Ultimate.
Naturally, the Eternal Waltz is the best Arc for Fadia.
You can also purchase Eternal Waltz from the Arc Shop for 25 Tri-Keys.
