Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is the world’s best-selling manga, with over 600 million copies sold and the number continues to rise with each new release. After nearly 29 years, One Piece remains incredibly popular, leading to various related projects and spin-off series, many of which focus on the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Roronoa Zoro, the skilled swordsman and a key member of the Straw Hat Pirates, is incredibly popular – often second only to Luffy himself. For years, fans have been eager to learn more about Zoro’s backstory. Now, it looks like that wish will be granted! A novel dedicated to Zoro’s life and experiences will be released on July 3, 2026, finally filling in the gaps in his character.
The Zoro Novel’s New Chapter Is Officially Expanding Zoro’s Story On July 3, 2026
The Zoro novel series isn’t brand new – it actually began around two years ago. The first chapter, titled “Chapter 0,” was released on June 4, 2024, as part of a special feature in One Piece Magazine. Two more chapters followed, released in subsequent magazine issues in December 2024 and October 2025. While the series hasn’t had any new installments since then, that’s about to change.
Good news for fans of Roronoa Zoro! This year, it was confirmed that more content is coming for his spin-off series. Starting July 3, 2026, the story will be available as a separate series, even for those who don’t collect the magazines it originally appeared in. Plus, a new chapter of the Zoro novel will be released, continuing the story and revealing more about his history.
New Novel Covers the Story of Roronoa Zoro Prior to Joining Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates
Zoro’s story revisits a time shortly after the death of Kuina. It starts with whispers of a dangerous killer and follows Zoro as he discovers Mihawk, revealing the origins of his intense rivalry with the world’s greatest swordsman.
After defeating a skilled swordsman, Zoro becomes determined to find even stronger opponents. This quest leads him to hear about “Mihawk’s Chasing Crane,” a legendary landmark pointing towards the world’s greatest swordsman, Mihawk, which Zoro now desires. His search unexpectedly draws him into a murder mystery, and he feels compelled to solve it. These events reveal much more about Zoro’s history and help him grow into a more complex and developed character.
The next part of the story, coming with the complete novel, will likely pick up right after the current events. Now that the murder mystery is solved and the “Mihawk’s Chasing Crane” incident was a hoax, the story can move forward with Zoro finally meeting Johnny and Yosaku – a meeting that was hinted at back in Chapter 2. This could lead to a quick, new adventure for Zoro.

The Zoro Novel Currently Stands As Non-Canon Supplementary Material
Fans are thrilled about the new content featuring Roronoa Zoro. While popular, Zoro’s backstory is actually quite minimal compared to other members of the Straw Hat crew. Many consider it the simplest, with the tragic event of Kuina’s death being its most significant part.
Even though the new novel is adding details to Zoro’s past, that doesn’t automatically make those details official to the main story. Initially, the official One Piece website said the novel was closely overseen by the author, Eiichiro Oda, which would have meant it was at least partially canon. However, that claim turned out to be incorrect and was removed from the website on April 30th, 2024.
Currently, this Zoro novel isn’t considered official One Piece story material, as Eiichiro Oda hasn’t been involved in its creation. It’s best to view it as a lighthearted extra story focused on Zoro, and any new information it presents about him or the One Piece world shouldn’t be treated as definitive. That said, Oda might choose to incorporate ideas from it into the main story later on.
Unfortunately, a short “SBS Corner” in One Piece Volume 105, released on March 3, 2023, appears to be the last time we’ll get new details about Zoro’s past. In this section, creator Eiichiro Oda shared Zoro’s family tree, confirming his lineage to the famous Wano samurai, Ryuma, through his grandmother’s side of the family.
The latest One Piece manga chapters are available to read via Manga Plus and Viz Media.
