This month marks 10 years of Overwatch, and Blizzard is celebrating with a special in-game event! Players can earn various rewards and loot boxes. It’s been quite a journey for the popular hero shooter, filled with both successes and challenges over the past decade.
Overwatch experienced its most significant changes yet in 2026. While some felt Blizzard lost direction initially by moving away from the original game and creating a sequel, the studio ultimately refined Overwatch and delivered a huge update. In February, Blizzard simplified the title – removing the “2” – and revamped the game’s story. Season 1 launched with 5 new playable characters, and 5 more were planned for release throughout the year. This major update proved successful, bringing Overwatch to new heights of popularity.
Overwatch Celebrates 10 Years With a New Event
Even though Blizzard released a new version of Overwatch in 2023 and recently reverted the name back to Overwatch, they’re still celebrating the game’s 10th anniversary. The original Overwatch came out on May 24, 2016, and Blizzard wants to mark this milestone. The anniversary event, Overwatch 2026, starts on May 12th and lasts until June 1st. Players can earn cosmetic rewards during the event, but details about what will be free, what will cost money, and what can be unlocked through gameplay are still to come.

The official Overwatch Twitter account has given us a preview of the rewards coming in the Anniversary event. While some details are still missing – likely to be revealed in a trailer or blog post – we know Blizzard is offering 21 original hero skins, 15 anniversary loot boxes, 33 banners and other 2D cosmetics created by the development team and community, and 5 unique weapon charms – one of which features a ’10’ with Mercy-style wings. Currently, we don’t know exactly what the cosmetics look like or which heroes will receive them, but the preview image does include Mercy, Tracer, and Winston. Given it’s an anniversary celebration, it’s safe to assume the original Overwatch heroes will be prominently featured.
Players can look forward to earning special anniversary titles. A community challenge will also begin during the event, where everyone can work together each week to unlock legendary loot boxes for Overwatch. The post suggests there will be even more reveals before the event starts this week.

Before the new event begins, players have a short window to get extra loot boxes by taking part in the current Overwatch event, Junkrat’s Loot Hunt. From May 8th to 12th, players could earn up to nine free loot boxes just by playing, and they also got double the Battle Pass XP. Time is running out to benefit from this, but Blizzard is quickly following up with even more content – the Overwatch Anniversary event will start right after.
