In competitive battles of Pokemon Champions, players almost always include a Mega Evolution because it’s one of the most powerful abilities in the game. Since you can only use one Mega Evolution per battle in Pokemon Champions, choosing the right one is crucial. This means some Mega Evolutions are much more effective than others and are used far more often by top players.
Right now, Pokemon Champions features 60 out of the 93 Mega Evolutions that exist, and we’re only including the ones currently available in the game.

As a player of Pokemon Champions, I’ve noticed certain Pokemon are way more popular than others – they’re basically what everyone’s using right now. Mega Charizard Y seems to be the go-to Mega Evolution because its Drought ability creates harsh sunlight, which massively boosts its Fire-type attacks and even lets it use Solar Beam in just one turn to take out Water-types that would normally cause trouble. Because of this, controlling the weather is super important! That’s why Mega Tyranitar is also really strong – its Sand Stream ability brings in a sandstorm, and Rock Slide is a great way to deal with Mega Charizard Y. It’s all about building a team that can handle the weather and counter what other players are doing.
In the game Pokemon Champions, Mega Gengar is the preferred choice for Perish Trap strategies because of its Shadow Tag ability. Mega Dragonite is a flexible option, boasting solid defenses with its Multiscale ability, and can attack quickly with moves like Extreme Speed. When it’s raining, its Hurricane attack is also guaranteed to hit. Mega Floette, a new Mega Evolution introduced in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, is very powerful thanks to its Fairy Aura ability, which makes its Light of Ruin move devastating against many Pokemon. However, because you need to purchase the $70 Pokemon Legends: Z-A game to use it, Mega Floette isn’t seen as often as other popular Mega Evolutions.

As a fan, I’ve noticed Mega Evolutions are super impactful in this tier – they can really fit onto almost any team! Some are even core to specific strategies. Take Mega Meganium, for example. It’s amazing at shutting down weather teams because its Mega Sol ability lets it use powerful moves like Solar Beam and Fire-type Weather Ball instantly, without needing Sunny Day first. Then there’s Mega Froslass, which is perfect for dealing with other weather teams. Its Snow Warning ability brings in hail, letting it use super accurate Blizzard attacks and boost its team’s defenses with Aurora Veil. It’s a really cool counter to a lot of strategies!
Many other Pokémon at this level play key roles in specific team strategies. For example, Mega Aggron is often used with Trick Room teams because it’s very slow but incredibly durable, letting it powerfully attack with moves like Body Press that benefit from high Defense. Mega Starmie, with its Huge Power ability and Skill Swap move, has created its own unique style of play, either boosting its own Attack or passing that boost to a teammate for a powerful combination.
B-Tier: Mega Evolutions with a Decent Gimmick

Mega Evolutions in this group are useful and can be strategically employed, but they aren’t quite as versatile as those found in higher tiers. Mega Victreebel exemplifies this – its Innards Out ability damages the Pokémon that defeats it, with the damage based on how much health Victreebel had remaining. This makes it good for taking out powerful attackers like Mega Charizard Y or Archaludon, though it might not always be the best use of a Mega Evolution.

Mega Hawlucha is a commonly used strategy Pokémon in battles due to its unique combination of Entrainment and the No Guard ability. No Guard guarantees that Mega Hawlucha’s attacks always hit, but it also means that all attacks aimed at it will land successfully. By using Entrainment, Mega Hawlucha can pass the No Guard ability to a teammate, such as Excadrill, allowing them to reliably use powerful, one-hit knockout moves like Horn Drill. While Mega Starmie offers a wider range of support options, Mega Hawlucha primarily excels with this specific strategy.
C-Tier: Very Situational Mega Evolutions

Mega Evolutions often have very specific uses, but don’t usually offer enough overall power or versatility to be effective outside of those situations. For example, Mega Houndoom’s ability, Solar Power, greatly boosts its Special Attack when the weather is sunny, letting it catch opponents off guard in Pokemon Champions. However, this comes at a cost: Mega Houndoom loses a significant amount of health each turn the sun is out, meaning it can’t stay in battle for long.
Both Mega Sableye and Mega Absol share the Magic Bounce ability, which sends status effects like poison or paralysis back to the opponent. While this can protect against moves like Taunt or hazards like Stealth Rock, neither Pokémon is particularly strong in other areas of battle. In fact, regular Sableye is often more effective because of its Prankster ability, which lets it use status moves easily. In the Pokemon Champions game, other Pokémon like Hatterene and Espeon use Magic Bounce more effectively.
D-Tier: Almost Always Outclassed by a Better Option

Many Mega Evolutions aren’t ideal for competitive Pokemon Champions battles because there are usually stronger alternatives that can do the same job. Mega Meowstic is a recent example – it’s been surpassed by other powerful Psychic-type Pokemon. Its ability, Trace, isn’t very effective, making it weaker than Mega Alakazam and Mega Gardevoir.
Mega Froslass has become a stronger choice than Mega Abomasnow, reducing its usefulness in battles. Previously, Mega Abomasnow’s ability, Snow Warning, was useful for quickly setting up Aurora Veil when paired with Alolan Ninetales. However, Mega Froslass now performs this same strategy more effectively, making it almost always a better option than Mega Abomasnow.
