PlayStation 5 consoles often overheat and suddenly turn off, especially if they aren’t cleaned regularly. Usually, simply removing dust from the fans fixes the problem. However, sometimes it requires a professional to take the console apart and replace the thermal paste. Recently, someone discovered the cause of their PS5 overheating during a complete disassembly – and what they found was quite surprising.
Man, it’s been crazy busy being a PS5 gamer lately, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down anytime soon! We’re still a ways off from Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2026, but there’s so much coming out before then. Everyone’s been hyped about games like Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and Saros, and now we’ve got Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, 007 First Light, and a remastered Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag on the way. But the biggest news? Marvel’s Wolverine is finally dropping on September 15th, and I can’t wait!
Bug Infestation Causes PS5 to Overheat
Lots of fantastic games have come out this year, and that means PlayStation 5s are probably working really hard. This can sometimes cause them to overheat. Overheating can happen for a few reasons, like dust buildup, blocked vents, or worn-out cooling materials. But it’s pretty unusual for a PS5 to overheat because of bugs inside the console.
Okay, so I just saw this absolutely wild post on Twitter from AlphaFox. It’s gone super viral – over 2.3 million views already! Basically, this repair shop took apart a PS5, and it was completely infested with cockroaches and other bugs. Seriously, everywhere – inside the SSD, all over the fans, even caked onto the heatsink. It needed some serious cleaning and repair work, to say the least. It was kinda gross, but fascinating to watch!

A major cause of PS5 overheating is when the liquid metal, which helps transfer heat from the processor to the cooling system, fails. A false report previously claimed that standing the PS5 upright caused the liquid metal to leak and lead to faster overheating. This was quickly corrected – the issue is more often seen in consoles that have been opened for repairs. While some believe standing the console vertically might cause the liquid metal to degrade faster, how significant this effect is remains a point of discussion among users.
Sony likely considered this issue when creating the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro, which appears to fix the original design’s weakness. While the chance of failure is already low for consoles that haven’t been taken apart, the PS5 Pro is built with an improved design featuring a raised surface. This helps spread the liquid metal evenly across the processor, reducing the risk of any problems.

Okay, so if you’ve been on the fence about getting a PS5, I’d maybe hold off just a little longer. I know Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming soon and everyone’s going to want one, but Sony just raised the prices. The digital version is now $600, the regular one with the disc drive is $650, and if you were hoping to get the more powerful Pro version, it’s a pretty steep $900! It’s a bummer, because I was hoping to upgrade, but that price jump is tough.
