There’s been a lot of discussion about the PlayStation 5 not having as many strong games as past PlayStation consoles, and 2026 hasn’t really changed that so far. The console got off to a slow start due to the COVID-19 pandemic and problems with scalpers, and Sony’s move towards games that are constantly updated with new content hasn’t fully worked out. While games like Marathon, Resident Evil Requiem, and Pragmata are available on PS5, many of the year’s best titles aren’t playable on PlayStation, which is disappointing. It’s important to consider some nuances, but the lack of major exclusives remains a problem.
Opencritic’s Top 10 Games of 2026 (as of April) Tell a Story
1. OPUS: Prism Peak (91) – PC and Switch 2
2. Pokemon Pokopia (90) – Switch 2
3. Lost and Found Co. (90) – PC
4. Resident Evil Requiem (89) – PC/PS5/Switch 2/Xbox Series X
5. Mewgenics (89) – PC
6. Hermit and Pig (89) – PC
7. Esoteric Ebb (88) – PC
8. Rhell: Warped Worlds & Troubled Times (87) – PC
9. Pragmata (87) – PC/PS5/Switch 2/Xbox Series X
10. Tombwater (86) – PC
Looking at this list of top games, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X only have two titles each. The Nintendo Switch is doing a little better, boosted by the popular exclusive Pokemon Pokopia and the quirky Tomadachi Life: Living the Dream (rated 79 on Opencritic). It also features Opus: Prism Peak, which is the highest-rated game on the list. However, it’s clear that PC is the best platform for players who want a wide range of options, as seven of the year’s best games are currently only available on PC.

It’s important to note that many of these highly-rated games haven’t been reviewed by a large number of critics. For example, Opus: Prism Peak currently has only 16 verified reviews, despite being at the top of the list. While its touching story might appeal to fans of games like Life is Strange and justify its score, the limited number of reviews compared to bigger titles like Resident Evil Requiem needs to be considered. That said, those who have played these less well-known games clearly love them, and this list shows just how many amazing PC games are out there.
The most talked-about game on this list is definitely Mewgenics, a quirky creation from the developer of The Binding of Isaac. It features addictive breeding mechanics and even references to Chris Chan. Lost and Found Co. is a relaxing and funny hidden object game, while Hermit and Pig is a delightful turn-based RPG inspired by games like Earthbound. If you enjoy deep RPGs similar to Disco Elysium, check out Esoteric Ebb. Rhell: Warped Worlds and Troubled Times offers a tough puzzle experience, and Tombwater cleverly combines the styles of Dark Souls and The Legend of Zelda. Currently, all of these games are only available on PC, meaning they can’t be played on PS5.
PlayStation versions of these games are expected, and we already know a version of Mewgenics is on the way. Considering Binding of Isaac was later released on PlayStation, it’s not surprising to see Mewgenics follow suit.
Why 2026 Won’t Be All Doom and Gloom for PlayStation Fans
PlayStation fans may have missed out on some games like Mewgenics, but 2026 looks promising for PS5. Saros, releasing at the end of April, could be a top game of the year, considering the developer’s history and the quality of their previous hit, Returnal. Later in the year, we’ll see Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games and a sequel to Kena: Bridge of Spirits called Scars of Kosmora. Plus, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will be exclusive to PlayStation 5. Both PlayStation and Xbox could benefit greatly if GTA 6 launches in November, potentially overshadowing the PC release. Despite a slower start to the year, 2026 should be a strong one for the PlayStation 5.
