I was a little disappointed to hear that Ralph Fiennes, the actor who brilliantly played Lord Voldemort in most of the Harry Potter films, doesn’t plan to return for the new HBO series. It’s set to come out around Christmas 2026, and while I understand his decision, it’s sad to think we won’t see his take on the character again.
Ralph Fiennes discussed the possibility of returning as Lord Voldemort in a new Harry Potter film during an appearance on BBC’s The Claudia Winkleman Show. When asked by the host, alongside guests Anna Faris, Olivia Cooke, and Michelle De Swarte, if he’d consider reprising the role, Fiennes explained he’d previously said he would be open to it after finishing the original film series. However, he added that since then, nothing has come of it and he believes the opportunity has passed.
Okay, so Ralph Fiennes was amazing as Voldemort, seriously chilling. But I was just wondering – how many of the Harry Potter films did he actually show up in? It feels like a lot, but I can never quite remember!
How Many Harry Potter Movies Did Ralph Fiennes Play Voldemort?
Ralph Fiennes first played Lord Voldemort near the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005, and continued as the main villain until the series finale in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Parts 1 and 2. Several actors had previously played Voldemort in different stages of the story. Interestingly, Fiennes’ nephew, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, also appeared in the series, playing a young Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) – after Ralph Fiennes had already taken on the role of Voldemort.
From the beginning of the Harry Potter films, Voldemort was a major threat, but Ralph Fiennes didn’t appear as the character in his full form until the fourth movie, when the story required his return. He then played Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010), before finally being defeated in the series’ final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Has HBO Cast Voldemort?
Casey Bloys Addresses Voldemort Casting Updates
Most of the actors for the upcoming Harry Potter series have been chosen, but the role of Lord Voldemort remains open. While many names have been suggested, including Cillian Murphy, who was previously ruled out, HBO’s Casey Bloys recently told Variety that no decision has been made yet. When asked about Tilda Swinton potentially playing the part, Bloys dismissed all rumors, stating he doesn’t even know who they are considering.
Okay, so all the chatter about who would play Voldemort? Apparently, that’s been put to rest by Bloys. As a huge fan, I’m excited to finally confirm that the first season of the Harry Potter series – officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – will star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry. And the best part? It’s going to be streaming exclusively on HBO Max!
