Recent updates to the ROG Xbox Ally handheld are designed to enhance how the device performs when connected to a TV or monitor, bringing the experience closer to using a traditional Xbox console.
The latest updates for your ROG Xbox Ally or ROG Xbox Ally X now let your games automatically switch to your TV and turn off the handheld screen – just like the Nintendo Switch. Microsoft explains this will let the Ally take advantage of your TV’s capabilities, improving game resolution, refresh rate, and HDR performance.
These updates include a new Display Widget for the in-game Game Bar, allowing you to change your screen resolution, refresh rate, and projection mode while playing. Plus, if you connect an Xbox controller while the handheld is docked, the handheld’s controls will automatically turn off, and the game will use the Xbox controller instead.
Microsoft has introduced Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) to the ROG Ally when it’s connected to a display. This feature enhances visuals, aiming for a quality similar to 1440p resolution and boosting the frame rate, especially noticeable on bigger screens. Currently, it’s only available to members of the Xbox Insider program.
Microsoft said it prioritised adding Auto SR to docked play for the handheld first, explaining:
Playing games while your Nintendo Switch is docked uses bigger screens and sharper resolutions, making any visual flaws or slowdowns more obvious. Auto SR was created to fix these issues, so we’re showcasing it first in docked mode, where we think players will benefit the most.
This update lets you connect games from other PC stores, like Steam and Epic, to the Xbox app. This combines all your PC games in one place, making it easier to find and launch them.
