Slay the Spire 2 is Being Review-Bombed

Slay the Spire 2 is currently receiving a lot of negative reviews, causing its Steam rating to drop to “Mixed.” The game, a sequel to the highly popular deck-building roguelite Slay the Spire, initially had an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating. However, recent updates have generally been met with disapproval from players.

When Slay the Spire 2 launched, it quickly became a hit. Players loved the wealth of content, well-tuned gameplay, new characters, and features like the four-player co-op mode. Its improved art style also attracted a lot of attention. The game quickly broke records, becoming the most played roguelite on Steam with over 57,000 concurrent players – surpassing even popular titles like Mewgenics and Hades 2.

Slay the Spire 2 is Getting Review-Bombed by Players Unhappy About Balancing Changes, Again

As a huge Slay the Spire 2 fan, I was really relieved when the March 2026 beta fixed a lot of the changes everyone hated – things were finally looking good for the developers, Mega Crit. But unfortunately, that good feeling didn’t last. The newest update, 0.103.2, is getting absolutely slammed with negative reviews. One review even calls the recent patch – they’re calling it ‘The Harbinger Update’ – outright fraudulent! They’re saying the developers aren’t making improvements, they’re just completely destroying what made the game fun. This player, who actually translated their review from Simplified Chinese, feels like the core strategies they’ve spent hundreds of hours perfecting have been completely ruined, and that the devs are acting like they know better than the players. They ended by saying this version of the game is a ‘hostile, gutted shell’ of what was promised and that playing it makes them feel sick.

A recent update to Slay the Spire 2, combining builds from the March and April beta branches, sparked strong negative reactions from players. The developers, Mega Crit, asked for patience in a Steam blog post, explaining that features moving from the beta branch weren’t final. However, players quickly ran out of patience, resulting in over 8,000 negative reviews in Simplified Chinese on April 17th and 18th.

It’s surprising how much criticism Slay the Spire 2 is getting after such a strong launch. Although it’s still under development, the game already has a lot to offer and feels very similar to the first Slay the Spire in terms of gameplay and fairness. The new characters add even more reasons to keep playing, and it was reasonable to expect Mega Crit to continue refining the game’s balance over time.

Like classic roguelike and roguelite games, Slay the Spire and its sequel sometimes result in runs that are impossible to win, no matter how well you play. Good games in this style rely heavily on random chance, so a bit of bad luck can lead to defeat. Slay the Spire 2 continues this tradition, and when the developers weaken certain cards or strategies, some players might see it as a negative change instead of recognizing it as a core element of the genre – the challenge of adapting to unpredictable circumstances.
