Often called “The King of Horror,” King has written bestsellers for decades, and many of his stories have been turned into popular movies and TV shows. He’s consistently praised for his incredible ability to tell a story.

For horror and thriller fans, a recommendation from Stephen King often means a show is worth watching. He’s praised series like Evil and From, and recently highlighted the new four-part miniseries Lord of the Flies, which became available on Netflix in the US on May 4, 2026.

Created by Jack Thorne, Lord of the Flies is based on William Golding’s classic 1954 novel. While this isn’t the first adaptation – the 1963 film directed by Peter Brook is well-known – the upcoming 2026 miniseries offers a new and contemporary perspective on this enduring, 72-year-old story. Lord of the Flies tells the seemingly straightforward story of a group of schoolboys who find themselves stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash.

As a film and literature buff, I’ve always been fascinated by stories about groups thrown into extreme situations, and Golding’s novel is a prime example. Initially, the boys in the story really try to create some semblance of civilization – they hold elections and try to make rules, all while desperately hoping to be rescued. But it doesn’t take long for things to fall apart. Fear creeps in, power struggles erupt, and their basic instincts take over, causing the fragile order they’d built to collapse. The conflict between characters like Piggy, Ralph, and Jack isn’t just about teenage drama, though; it really embodies a much bigger struggle between things like logic and primal urges, and the loss of innocence as things get darker.

This new series takes a closer look at the story’s key ideas by focusing each episode on a different character, letting viewers really understand what they’re thinking and feeling. The young actors deliver powerful performances, and critics have especially highlighted the work of David McKenna (as Piggy), Lox Pratt (as Jack), and Winston Sawyers (as Ralph).

The new adaptation of Lord of the Flies is receiving widespread acclaim, and for good reason. It currently has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the direction by Marc Munden, its close adherence to the original book, and its intense, frightening atmosphere.
