With so much competition, only the strongest can succeed. While individual skill is important, it’s unwise to underestimate the power of teamwork.
Watching One Piece, I’ve noticed a pattern: crews with a good mix of skills tend to do better than those relying on just a few strong fighters. It really highlights that even the most powerful individual can’t reach their full potential with a weak team. That got me thinking about the strongest characters in One Piece who, surprisingly, have the weakest crews. Here’s what I came up with.
This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
X-Drake
- Affiliation: Drake Pirates
X-Drake first appeared as the captain of the Drake Pirates, making a strong impression on fans with his abilities when he arrived in the Sabaody Archipelago. His power comes from the Ryu Ryu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that lets him transform into an Allosaurus, greatly increasing his attack strength.
Being an Ancient Zoan-type Devil Fruit, X-Drake’s fruit also made him physically stronger, more durable, and gave him greater stamina. He was clearly the most powerful member of his crew, but the others were relatively weak and unremarkable. It’s likely Drake intentionally assembled a less capable crew to maintain his cover while working undercover.
Trafalgar Law
- Affiliation: Heart Pirates
Trafalgar Law leads the Heart Pirates and is a fan-favorite character. While he didn’t appear much before the two-year time jump, he became a key player after saving Luffy’s life. From that point on, Law was involved in nearly every major story arc.
Trafalgar Law is a powerful and well-developed character. His Devil Fruit, the Ope Ope no Mi, is considered one of the strongest available, granting him incredible abilities for both healing and combat. He’s even mastered its full potential through awakening. However, Law is held back by his relatively weak crew; members like Bepo, Sacchi, and Penguin simply aren’t as capable as those found in other powerful groups.
Portgas D. Ace
- Affiliation: Spade Pirates
Portgas D. Ace was well-known as a commander in the Whitebeard Pirates, but before joining them, he captained his own pirate crew, the Spade Pirates. They quickly became famous thanks to Ace’s impressive feats. He wielded the power of the Mera Mera no Mi and even defeated one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, making him a legend throughout the world.

Ace’s unique abilities made him incredibly powerful and quickly established him as a rising star. He was so strong that the World Government even tried to recruit him as one of their allied warlords, but he turned down their offer. Compared to Ace, the other members of his crew weren’t as strong.
Eustass Kid
- Affiliation: Kid Pirates
Eustass Kid was a notorious pirate with a burning ambition to be the Pirate King. He took his dream very seriously and would fly into a rage if anyone mocked it. Compared to other powerful pirates known as Supernovas, Kid was far more brutal and intimidating. He wouldn’t hesitate to use violence, even torture, against anyone who crossed him.
It’s clear Kid wouldn’t have been successful without considerable strength, and thankfully, he possessed the Jiki Jiki no Mi Devil Fruit. This fruit allowed him to manipulate magnetic forces, letting him attract and repel metal. In battle, he could use this power to construct massive metal structures and overwhelm his opponents. While Kid also had access to Conqueror’s Haki, he hadn’t fully mastered it yet. Of his crew, only Killer was a truly skilled fighter; the others were relatively weak and wouldn’t fare well against the strongest crews in the New World.
Gecko Moria
Gecko Moria used to be one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, but now he’s a fugitive. He was captured by Blackbeard’s crew, but his subordinate, Perona, helped him escape from Hachinosu. Although it’s easy to feel sympathy for Moria now, it’s important to remember he once rivaled Kaido, one of the strongest pirates in the world. They even had a memorable battle in Wano Country.
The fight between Kaido and Moria reached a standstill, and Kaido responded by killing all of Moria’s crew. Had even a few of them survived, the battle could have gone very differently – Kaido might have even lost.
Bartolomeo
Bartolomeo leads the Barto Club and is the biggest fan of the Straw Hat Pirates. He deeply admires every member of the crew and would do anything to keep them safe. During the events in Dressrosa, he officially became part of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.
Bartolomeo often comes across as silly, but it’s easy to overlook the fact that he’s a powerful Supernova with a bounty of 200 million berries. His Devil Fruit, the Bari Bari no Mi, allows him to create incredibly strong barriers – strong enough to even block attacks from someone like Kozuki Oden. While his crew is loyal to Luffy and the Straw Hats, they aren’t as powerful as Bartolomeo himself.
