The CEO of Take-Two Interactive has given an update on bringing Borderlands 4 to the next Nintendo Switch. Borderlands 4, released last September, was the first major new installment in the popular looter-shooter series since 2019’s Borderlands 3. While the game received good reviews and had the biggest launch in the series’ history, Take-Two has said sales haven’t been as high as initially hoped, though they still anticipate long-term success.
Although previous Borderlands games hadn’t launched on Nintendo systems at the same time as other platforms, the Borderlands Legendary Collection arrived on the Nintendo Switch in 2020, followed by Borderlands 3 in 2023. During a Nintendo Switch 2 presentation last April, Take-Two and Gearbox announced that Borderlands 4 would be available on the new console in 2025. However, the release, originally planned for October 3rd, has been delayed indefinitely, and development is currently on hold.
Take-Two CEO Says Switch 2 Not a Primary Platform, Borderlands 4 Port Still Possible
So, I was reading an interview with Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, over on Game File, and he talked about the Switch 2 and what’s happening with Borderlands 4. Apparently, the Switch 2 version is delayed because they were actually fixing problems with the PC version first. They wanted to get the game running really well before bringing it to any other platforms. The good news is he said the delay isn’t because the Switch 2 is too hard to develop for – he actually thinks a Borderlands 4 port is totally achievable.
While Take-Two Interactive has been a big supporter of Nintendo, bringing games like Civilization 7, NBA 2K, and WWE 2K to the Switch, company CEO Strauss Zelnick didn’t say when Borderlands 4 might come to the Switch 2. He explained to Stephen Totilo that Sony and Microsoft consoles remain their main priority, which is evident in their current game releases.
Okay, so it’s a relief to hear the delay for Borderlands 4 on the Switch 2 isn’t because the system can’t handle it. Apparently, the Switch 2 is way more powerful than the old Switch, and a ton of games are already running on it. 2K Games doesn’t seem to be focusing heavily on the Switch 2, but they will still release their annual sports games on it, which is good news for us Switch players!

It’s still frustrating that there’s no announced release date for Borderlands 4 on the Switch 2. The game was a key third-party title highlighted during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct in April 2025, and Gearbox’s CEO, Randy Pitchford, even made an appearance. Hopefully, Switch 2 owners will be able to play Borderlands 4 on the system before too long.
