This article discusses events from episode 5 of That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime Season 4, titled “The First Step,” and contains spoilers. It is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
In the fifth episode of That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime season 4, Rimuru and the delegates from Tempest attended their first meeting with leaders from the Western nations, following an invitation from the Council of the West. What was expected to be a straightforward discussion of terms quickly became tense when the Council presented conditions that angered Rimuru, exactly as Mariabel Rozzo intended.
This episode effectively sets the stage for an exciting conflict between Seltrozzo, a brilliant strategist, and Rimuru, the Demon Lord. Their battles will play out like a complex game of chess against the backdrop of an upcoming war in the east.
Exploring the Kingdom of Engrassia
TenSura’s Slice of Life Aspects Shine Briefly
What makes That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime so enjoyable is its ability to balance intense, dramatic moments—like battles—with the everyday personalities of its characters. The latest episode, Season 4, episode 5, started off strong with Rimuru and his allies successfully crossing the border into Engrassia, complete with proper documentation.
It’s absurd to watch the Demon Lord, who destroyed Falmuth all by himself, follow the rules, but this is all part of a larger effort to help humans feel more at ease around monsters.

There’s a charming scene where Rimuru takes Shuna, Benimaru, and Soei shopping for everyday clothes, and they all look fantastic. When Benimaru and Soei come out of the dressing rooms, Rimuru briefly feels a pang of envy, and his former human self, “Satoru,” remembers not liking handsome men. It’s amusing to see glimpses of the human Rimuru underneath the surface, especially when interacting with these Kijin who behave so much like people.
After finishing their shopping, they meet with Hinata Sakaguchi, a former Western Holy Knight who is now their ally, at a restaurant. They share what they’ve learned about the Council’s plans, including the ridiculous scheme of the Engrassian prince to provoke Rimuru in an attempt to reveal the Demon Lord’s real identity.
The Identification of a Conspiracy
Various Pieces Together Paint a Picture of the Mastermind Behind the Council
Rimuru used a soundproof barrier to keep their conversation private, then updated everyone on the death of Count Muese. Muese was the man who tried to disrupt Tempest’s economy at the end of the festival in season 3 of TenSura. As a reminder, after the festival, the merchants needed to be paid, but Muese schemed to force them to only accept Dwarven currency.
If Tempest hadn’t had the funds, they would have been forced to borrow from the Five Elders – a powerful group above the Council of the West, and heavily influenced by Mariabel Rozzo. Soei then explained the details of Muese’s death, which Rimuru and Hinata believe was caused by a sniper.
People from worlds without guns are naturally surprised when they see them, and Shuna finds the small derringer particularly appealing, thinking it’s a weapon she could easily handle. Rimuru and Hinata realize this reaction was likely planned by someone connected to the Council, making their upcoming meeting even more complicated. Finally, the well-dressed delegation from Tempest arrives at the Council headquarters, only to be greeted with a noticeably different reception than expected.
The festival wasn’t a disaster, and representatives from smaller countries were pleased with Rimuru and Tempest. However, they were quickly dismissed by officials from much more powerful nations. These officials are eager to ensure their own countries are given priority when Tempest starts building its new magitrain system.
The Council’s Big Mistake
Humans Incur Rimuru’s Wrath… Again
The Council clearly plans to accept Tempest as a member. At the start of the meeting, they showed Rimuru a first version of the agreement. After he reviewed it, they spent about three hours making changes and additions. The Council has three main conditions that Tempest must meet before being officially welcomed.
- Compliance with international law
- The opening of Tempest’s market
- The supply of military might
Honestly, I was really worried about Point 2 – it seemed like a huge risk and could have led to someone stealing Tempest’s amazing tech! But Point 3 actually made a lot of sense; letting Tempest’s forces work with the Council’s member states is a brilliant way to grow our influence and earn some much-needed funds. Everything was going pretty smoothly, a mostly polite discussion, until they presented Rimuru with their final proposal after three hours. That’s when things turned really disrespectful – and it was totally orchestrated by Mariabel Rozzo. She’s clearly pulling the strings with both the Council and even those powerful Five Elders!
As Rimuru and his allies get ready for an important meeting, Mariabel is secretly working to sabotage Tempest’s chances of joining the Council of the West. She’s using Johan Rostia to create a scenario where Rimuru will inadvertently cause the application to fail, making it seem like a decision Rimuru made himself rather than a direct rejection from the Council members. Johan doesn’t like taking orders from a child, but he understands he’s in no position to argue. The episode ends with a cliffhanger, leaving viewers unsure exactly what triggered Rimuru’s intense anger – something rarely seen from him. Overall, season 4, episode 5 of That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime was a compelling installment, skillfully balancing lighthearted moments with the serious political developments driving the plot forward.
I’ve been watching the latest season of That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime – Season 4 – and you can find it on Crunchyroll. They release new episodes every Friday, so that’s when I tune in.
