The 2021 Mystery Anime Odd Taxi is Even Better on Crunchyroll’s Blu-Ray

Fans have been requesting it for years, and now the unique anime series Odd Taxi is finally available on Blu-ray in North America, thanks to Crunchyroll! Released in October 2025, this is the first time the series, based on the work of Kazuya Konomoto and Takeichi Abaraya, has been released on Blu-ray outside of Japan, and it doesn’t disappoint. The show, which won awards for Best Protagonist and Best Director at the 2021 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, originally captivated audiences in 2021 with its intriguing story, memorable characters, and distinctive art style. Set in a world where animals talk and act like humans, Odd Taxi quickly became a fan favorite, and now Crunchyroll is letting fans own the complete series.

Odd Taxi centers around Hiroshi Odokawa, a quiet and somewhat withdrawn 41-year-old walrus who drives a taxi. Abandoned by his parents as a child, he’s not naturally inclined to conversation, but his job forces him to interact with a variety of passengers in Tokyo. Through these encounters, Hiroshi becomes entangled in a series of mysteries and conspiracies, including the disappearance of a young woman. Both the police and the yakuza suspect his taxi’s dashcam holds clues to what happened to her. The anime is perfectly paced for binge-watching and is likely to leave a lasting impression on viewers.

Crunchyroll’s Odd Taxi Blu-Ray Release Is a Must-Have for Fans of 2021’s Most Unexpected Hit

Recently, more and more fans are choosing to buy physical copies of shows – like DVDs and Blu-rays – instead of just relying on streaming services. Crunchyroll has responded to this trend by releasing both older favorites and newer series on disc. While you can still stream shows like Odd Taxi, the Blu-ray version offers noticeably better picture quality. The 1080p high definition format looks fantastic on larger TVs, bringing out details you might miss when streaming. It also includes both Japanese and English audio tracks, and the Dolby TrueHD sound really makes the show’s dialogue and music stand out.

The Blu-ray release of Odd Taxi is pretty basic when it comes to extras – you only get a reversible cover and a slipcase. Other recent releases from Crunchyroll have included collectible items, but this one keeps it simple. A special Blu-ray box with an art book, soundtrack CD, a figure of Odokawa, and other goodies was released in Japan, but it’s rare and might be hard to find. Even so, it’s great to have the series available on Blu-ray!

The Blu-ray collection of Odd Taxi is normally $69.98, but subscribers can get it for $53.18. It’s currently out of stock, but is expected to be available again on July 30, 2026.

A Lack of Bonus Bells and Whistles May Frustrate Some

The bonus features on the two-disc set are fairly light, totaling around five minutes of content. They include versions of the opening and closing themes without any lyrics, a promotional video, and some commercials for the series. While not extensive, it’s enjoyable to fully appreciate the artistry of the opening theme without distractions. The ending animation, featuring Hiroshi’s taxi ride set to Suzuko Mimori’s “Sugarless Kiss,” is also surprisingly calming to watch.

If you love Odd Taxi, getting the Blu-ray is a great way to ensure you can always watch it and support the series’ creator. While it doesn’t have a lot of extra features, it’s fantastic that Crunchyroll released a physical copy after hearing what fans wanted. A few extra sketches or interviews would have been nice, but it’s still a worthwhile addition to any anime collection, especially for the price.
