Good news for fans of The Lord of the Rings tabletop games! Restoration Games has announced a new adventure, titled The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit, set to launch in 2027. This comes as several new games based on The Lord of the Rings are in development, although one recently had to be cancelled.

Despite the disappointing release of Lord of the Rings: Gollum, the Lord of the Rings franchise has seen some successful games recently, like Tales of the Shire and Return to Moria, which have resonated with fans. The future looks bright, too – Warhorse Studios, known for Kingdom Come: Deliverance, is developing an open-world RPG set in Middle-earth. Although Amazon canceled its planned MMO, they still intend to create more Lord of the Rings games. And next year, tabletop games based on the series will also be released.

Restoration Games Gives Lost Strategy Game New Life with The Lord of the Rings

Restoration Games is releasing a new strategy board game called The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit, set during the events of The Return of the King. The game is a reimagining of their 2000 Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit game, now played across iconic locations like the Battle of Pelennor Fields, Minas Tirith, Pelargir, and Mount Doom. Later this year, they’ll launch a crowdfunding campaign for a Deluxe Edition, which will include large, detailed models of Minas Tirith and Mordor. The standard retail version of the game is scheduled to launch in 2027, following the release of the Deluxe Edition.

Restoration Games has shared a “Behind the Scenes” trailer for The King’s Gambit, giving fans a preview of the 3D models, miniatures, and maps planned for the game’s retail and deluxe editions. The trailer showcases miniatures like the Riders of Rohan and The Witch King, as well as a detailed 3D model of Minas Tirith. These designs stay true to the look of the different Lord of the Rings groups, while also adding unique artistic details.

Restoration Games is a board game studio known for bringing back classic, out-of-print games with updated features. Think of them as a remake studio, but for tabletop games. Their latest project is a revival of Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit, a game that inspired The King’s Gambit and has become a valuable and hard-to-find collectible. This new version is generating a lot of excitement among board game fans.
